BJP leaders working to install a popular Govt

Imphal, May 04 2025: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and BJP leaders are reportedly working together to bring an end to the Manipur crisis and install a popular Government in the State.

A consensus candidate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and RSS leader Mohan Bhagwat may be elected as the new Chief Minister of Manipur, sources said.

Mohan Bhagwat and Narendra Modi had a detailed discussion on the Manipur crisis and President's Rule being imposed in the State at RSS headquarters, Nagpur on March 30, 2025 .

The two leaders also discussed replacing JP Nadda with a new leader who espouses RSS ideology as the new president of BJP.

Subsequent upon the high profile meeting, the Central leaders have initiated steps expeditiously to work out a solution to the protracted crisis and install a popular Government, said the sources.

On the other hand, BJP's co-ordinator in the North East Sambit Patra is set to arrive here tomorrow to take stock of the prevailing situation.

Sources said that Patra is likely to visit Churachandpur.

RSS leaders have taken serious note of the lingering grievances of the people of Manipur against the BJP Government's failure to control the Manipur violence in time.

The BJP Government's failure to contain the violence and initiate any concrete measure to bring an end to the violence even after two years has been providing abundant firepower to the Opposition Congress to attack BJP .

BJP has been finding it hard to respond to the multitude of questions raised by Congress and other Opposition parties on the Manipur crisis.

With the people of Manipur utterly disappointed with the failure of the BJP Government to contain the violence, BJP suffered humiliating defeat in Manipur in the Lok Sabha election held in 2024 .

Congress candidates scored landslide victories in both Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency and Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency.

The humiliating defeat suffered by the BJP candidate and the candidate backed by BJP despite having BJP Governments both at the Centre and the State reflected people's anger and disappointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, then Chief Minister N Biren and BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sharda, said the sources.

On the other hand, a petition was filed at the Supreme Court based on an alleged leaked audio tape which implicated N Biren with the Manipur violence.

The apex Court has already demanded a forensic report on the authenticity of the alleged leaked audio tape and the case is going on.

In the meantime, many ruling MLAs started questioning the leadership of N Biren, and a huge chasm surfaced between Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Th Satyabrata and Chief Minister N Biren.

Soon after, the ruling MLAs were divided into two opposing camps, with one camp clamouring for replacement of Chief Minister N Biren while the other camp wanted N Biren to continue as the State's Chief Minister.

After a large number of ruling MLAs repeatedly questioned the leadership of N Biren, Amit Shah called Biren to Delhi and directed him to tender his resignation.

Biren resigned from the post of Chief Minister on February 9, 2025 .

Following the Chief Minister's resignation, President's Rule was imposed on February 13, 2025.Even though the President's Rule is completing three months soon, the Government is still unable to bring a solution to the Manipur crisis.

Following Amit Shah's bold announcement that there would be free movement on all National Highways in Manipur with effect from March 8, 2025, the Governor sent a passenger bus from Imphal to Senapati via Kangpokpi with security escorts.

But Kuki people blocked and attacked the bus at Kangpokpi and set it on fire.

Many security personnel were also injured in the attack by Kuki protesters.

Even after taking direct control of the State administration, the Government of India is still unable to open National Highways in the State.

Taking serious note of all these facts, RSS and BJP leaders initiated steps to bring an end to the crisis and install a popular Government in the State, said the sources.

Not long after Amit Shah stated in the Parliament during the budget session that President's Rule was imposed in Manipur in the aftermath of N Biren's resignation as nobody came forward to form a new Government, a number of MLAs belonging to BJP and other parties submitted a letter to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister on April 29, 2025 seeking their concurrence on reinstalling a popular Government in the State.

Meanwhile, some sections of people have been wondering if there is a big difference between BJP and RSS on the Manipur crisis and the imposition of President's Rule.

Before PR was imposed, RSS leader Mohan Bhagwat categorically stated that the Government should bring a solution to the Manipur crisis at the earliest.

During his meeting with Mohan Bhagwat at Nagpur on March 30, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly stated that a solution would be worked out, peace restored and a popular Government would be formed by midMay, said the sources.

However, the question of bringing a solution to the Manipur crisis and reinstallation of a popular Government was delayed by the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22.Nonetheless, some Union Ministers and RSS leaders visited Manipur in the past few days and their visits may be linked to bringing solution to the crisis and installation of a popular Government, said the sources.

RSS deputy leader Dr Dattatreya Hosabale visited Imphal recently and held talks with BJP MLAs, RSS Manipur leaders and BJP Manipur leaders on different issues.

If a popular Government is formed, Narendra Modi and Mohan Bhagwat may choose a man of integrity with strong sense of Nationalism and political acumen as the next Chief Minister of Manipur.

BJP and RSS leaders have a strong fear that BJP may suffer crushing defeat in the next Manipur Legislative Assembly election which is due in early 2027 in case a popular Government is not formed within a short time.

Meanwhile another source informed that a team of high level State Government officials and RSS leaders have been working to make an assessment of the prevailing law and order situation of Manipur and also the political unrest.

The Central Government may invite representatives of Meitei and Kuki communities as well as Naga leaders to peace talks outside the State, according to the sources.
