Kongba River breaches at 3 points, more areas inundated
Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, June 02 2025: While several areas of the State have been already facing devastating floods due to breaching of river embankments and overflow triggered by incessant rainfall since May 28, many more places have been inundated after Kongba River breached its embankments at three locations.

As a result, many places of Thongju, Keirao and Kshetrigao Assembly segments have been flooded.

A 50 feet section of the eastern embankment of Kongba River collapsed at Kyamgei Takhok Mapal at around 1 am today and thus several localities were submerged.

Takhok Mapal paddy fields and the western portion of Keirao Makting have been transformed into a vast water body.

Several areas of Thongju AC were flooded as the western bank of Kongba River breached at Bashikhong Kongba Irong (Waikhom Mapa) at around 2.30 am.

The affected areas include Bashikhong, Kajipat, Wangkhei Loumanbi, Khongman, Okram Chuthek and Kitna Panung.

A 300 feet section of Kongba River's eastern embankment collapsed last night at Kongba Laishram Leikai.

The waters gushing through the breached embankment are steadily flooding Kongba Laishram Leikai, Wangkhei Thambalkhong, northern side of Kongba Kshetri Leikai, western side of Pangong, Huirem Leikai and the paddy fields of Bamonkampu.

Moreover, water overflowing from Kongba River over its western embankment has inundated Wangkhei Pukhrambam Leirak, Laishram Leikai, Hijam Leirak, Wangkheimayum Leirak and a large number of houses on both sides of Ayangpalli Road.

Runoff flood waters from these places have started flooding many other houses at Wangkhei Tokpam Leikai.

The flood waters were flowing over Wangkhei-Kongba Road at Wangkhei Tokpam Leikai.

Kongba Nandeibam Leikai and Khongman Mangjil have also been affected.

In addition, water overflowing from Iril River at Kshetri Awang Leikai (near Princeton School) has further compounded the flood woes at Wangkhei Thambalkhong, Kshetri Bengoon and Kshetrigao.

The breached portion of Kongba River at Kyamgei Takhok Mapal has been restored this afternoon.

However, there is a strong apprehension that the breached river embankment at Bashikhong Kongba Irong may grow wider and further aggravate the flood situation in the surrounding areas.

Mayai Lambi cut off

Mayai Lambi, a key highway connecting Imphal West with Kakching district has been cut off after a considerable section of the highway was submerged by flood waters.

According to information culled from the local people, a 30 feet section of the Imphal River's embankment collapsed at around 2.10 am today in between Hayel and Rangoon within Mayang Imphal Assembly segment.

As the embankment collapsed, huge volumes of water gushing from the breached portion rapidly submerged the nearby low-lying areas including a considerable length of Mayai Lambi.

Meanwhile, local people and authorities have been making all efforts to repair and restore the breached embankment.

Late in the evening a diversion, by digging the road, was made for the water to flow towards Loktak.

Local MLA Kongkham Robindro was also personally involved in the river embankment repairing works.

Apart from visiting flood affected areas of Mayang Imphal AC, MLA K Robindro was directly involved in fighting floods and plugging in river banks where flood waters had started seeping through.

Members of Arambai Tenggol also joined the collective efforts to plug the breached section.

Breached embankments restored

The breached portions of Imphal River embankments at Heingang Mayai Leikai and Khurai Heikrumakhong have been successfully restored today.

With the successful restoration of the breached embankments, the water levels have started receding at Heingang Mayai Leikai and Khurai Heikru Makhong.

Now, the two localities are accessible.

After the breached embankment at Khurai Heikru Makhong was restored, water levels receded at Khurai Konsam Leikai and Khurai Nandeibam Leikai.

These localities are also now accessible.
