Imphal, June 02 2017: The 1st session (Part-II) of the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly began today with Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar Singh, who is also in charge of Finance portfolio, introducing 'The Manipur Goods and Services Tax Bill, 2017' in order to consider and pass the Bill during the Assembly Session.

While introducing the Bill, Yumnam Joykumar also highlighted the objectives and merits of the Bill.

He said that passing of GST Bill is essential and urged all the Members of the House to study it minutely.

Significantly, save for Th Shyamkumar the five other Congress MLAs who had switched sides to the BJP were made to sit on the Opposition bench with the Congress.

Assembly pays obituary reference to Karam Thamarjit

Before the Session began, the House made an obituary reference on the demise of former MLA from 6-Keirao AC Karam Thamarjit Singh.

Presentation of committee report and introduction of Government Bill was also taken up in today's session.

Leader of the House N Biren Singh while initiating the obituary reference, said the untimely demise of Karam Thamarjit Singh is very unfortunate.

"He was elected as Member of the House in 2012 on MSCP ticket.

He was a matured and prominent person.

He also had a good academic record, and before joining politics he worked as an entrepreneur and set up many Self-Help Groups mainly for the unemployed women," Chief Minister N Biren said while extending solidarity to the bereaved family.

Opposition leader O Ibobi Singh recalled the good times he had with the late Karam Thamarjit.

He noted that Thamarjit was a talented entrepreneur who was interested in promoting skill development among the people for sustainable growth.

"His death is a great lost not only to the people of Keirao AC but for the entire State as well," O Ibobi said.

CAF and PD Minister Karam Shyam said that Thamarjit studied in Ideal High School from class I to V and in Sainik School from class VI to XII.

He completed MBA (Marketing) from Bombay University and later served as sales manager in a renowned private firm.

Before entering politics, his main concern was unemployment issue in the State particularly among women.

PHED Minister Losii Dikho said before entering politics he and Thamarjit worked together as social workers.

He used to visit Mao and motivate the farmers.

"Thamarjit was an affectionate person who loved to spread peace and harmony among the people.

I share my condolence to the bereaved family," he added.

The obituary reference was also participated by Works Minister Th Biswajit Singh, Social Welfare Minister Nemcha Kipgen, Parliamentary Secretary L Rameshwori Meetei and MLA P Brojendro.

Later, Speaker Y Khemchand moved a resolution that the House express grief and sorrow over the demise of Karam Thamarjit.

A 2-minute silence was also observed as a mark of respect to the departed soul.
