Uneasy calm reigns Ukhrul, AR holds flag march

Ukhrul, August 31 2014: Following the violent confrontation between civilians and security forces yesterday which left two civilians dead apart from injuring 26 civilians and security forces, an uneasy calm prevails in Ukhrul town.

After the district administration requisitioned paramilitary forces, 41 Assam Rifles took over the responsibility of area domination exercise in the district headquarters.

Troops of 41 AR were patrolling along major roads of the town since early morning so as to avert any unwanted incidents and repercussions.

41 AR Commandant Gaurav Bose flag marched with his troops under the banner "Let us maintain peace and tranquillity in Ukhrul town" .

Though the situation in the district headquarters appeared peaceful, people's temper was still running high.

Two civilians Aran and Alek who were physically assaulted by police commandos yesterday were rescued after intervention by the 41 AR Commandant.

The duo were rushed to military Hospital and they alleged that their mobile phone and wallets were snatched by police.

They are said to be out of danger though critical.

The 16 Naga tribes of Manipur would join the condolence service of Ramkashing and Mayopam at TNL ground tomorrow 12 noon showing solidarity and oneness.

Leaders of all tribes along with their colleagues would attend the last rite at Ukhrul.

UNC president Adani would then convene a high level meeting to chalk out future course of action.

The demand for alternative arrangement outside GoM, pending settlement of Indo-Naga peace talk as well as the prevailing situation in Ukhrul would also figure prominently at the meeting.

Meanwhile the Tangkhul apex customary body TNL has allotted site for deceased Ramkashing and Mayopam at TNL Ground for their heroic acts for the cause of Naga community.

TNL president SD Reisang said that tens of thousands of Nagas are expected to attend the condolence service and the funeral.

He blamed the State Government for yesterday's fatal clash.

The incident could have been averted if the State revoked CrPC 144 and withdrew additional security forces deployed at the town.

Meanwhile, local MLA Samuel Risom visited Ukhrul and interacted with the civil organization leaders and also visited injured victims at hospital.

He demanded judiciary enquiry into the Ukhrul incident.

The MLA also urged the State for revocation 144 CrPC and withdrawal of Commando and IRB from Ukhrul.

The Deputy Commissioner Ukhrul expressed his regret, and shared grief with the bereaved families as well as with all injured victims.

Autopsy test of the two deceased was completed at around 5 pm at JNIMS.

Although all the security held captive by protesters have been released, the missing weapons are yet to be recovered.
