The puppet
Sorokhaibam Priya *
Left and right, a string that ties.
Hands and feet, a string that binds.
Lips muffled with lies,
eyes blindfolded, closed.
Follow the voice directing the play.
Must they dance to every beat?
Is this the play they were promised?
The script already written.
The strings already held
by a master sitting
on a red throne.
They don't know about their mother.
She bleeds her life,
muffles her voice.
She was born poor,
yet her tears keep falling.
Oh, sacrifice, dear soul,
pay with blood
for a freedom
long sold to the master.
Democracy,
a joke we learn by heart.
If they gain,
why worry about freedom?
Let her fade tomorrow,
as long as they stay dry.
Maybe today is their turn.
They are a puppet.
Their master still sits
on the red throne.
