Her Godname
Sorokhaibam Priya *
She stood before the mirror,
Her hands rough like eroded sand,
Dark circles worn beneath her eyes,
Lips dried like an orange peel,
A few shy grey hairs fighting
To break through the darkness,
In paint-stained, loose clothes.
“Good mother, good wife, good woman.”
Her good names traded for her godname,
And she practiced the smile
“No.”
Slipped out like a war horn.
She stood before the mirror.
Fresh kajal adorned her eyes,
Her nails shone like freshly cut diamonds,
Her new clothes smelled like a spring-filled garden.
“Ungrateful. Mannerless. Characterless.”
Her new bad names traded
For newly found peace.
A satisfied smile painted her face.
For once,
she was more than
the names they gave her.
