First poster of Priyakanta Laishram's Interlude released

The first official poster of Manipuri filmmaker Priyakanta Laishram’s upcoming live-action short film Interlude was released on 27 September, introducing the project with a sparse visual identity and limited narrative details.

Produced by Roushil Singla under Priyakanta Productions, the film stars Narmada Shougaijam, Baggee Tonjam, Parihanba Thingnam, Ramesh Atom, Ramva Leishangthem and Shorojinii Rajkumari in key roles.

Interlude adopts a distinct visual format, having been filmed completely in black and white and composed in a 4:3 frame. The choices are part of Laishram’s latest experiment with a pared-back and realistic mode of filmmaking.

The film also deliberately moves away from the use of a conventional musical score. There is no background music in Interlude, with the soundscape built around environmental sounds, location ambience and silence.

The film is set within the contemporary context of Manipur, with its narrative centred on a brief human encounter. Details of the storyline have largely been kept under wraps, with the poster serving as the first indication of the film’s visual and tonal approach.

Laishram has worked in several capacities within Manipuri cinema, including as a director, actor, writer, editor and producer. His latest project continues his interest in experimenting with cinematic form, particularly through its monochrome cinematography, unconventional frame ratio and naturalistic sound design.

With the release of its first poster, Interlude has now entered its public phase, with further information on the film’s release and festival journey expected to follow.
