Yengkhom Devson’s (aka momoo) who was in the news for his patented seamless garment making machine “bemm” named after his sister, unveiled a collection of his seamless garments to the media on the 19th of December, 2007.

Yengkhom Devson - (aka momoo)
In a press conference organized by the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, Ministry of textile, Govt. Of India. New Delhi, Prof. Asha Baxi, Senior Professor and DEAN NIFT, New Delhi said, “The garments which are body fitted and also have flare are difficult to achieve without seams but Devson has done it without seams, and also all the garments are made without using cutting scissors and the sewing machine, which are fantastic”.

The garments worn by the models during the press conference are all seamless, which means it does not have stitching or joining, like the usual garments has. It’s a new technique and product of garments, which is one of a kind and first time in the fashion world.

When the Fashion world is hungry for something new, Devson’s seamless woven garments has filled up the gap and give altogether whole new line of fashion. This will be the starting of a whole new line of fashion.

“The whole new technology will not replace the present process of making garments or produce unemployment; instead it will give a new process and generate employment”, said Devson. “In future it will also help the dying weavers and give opportunity not only to weave fabrics or long length of clothes but weave seamless garments from the loom modified to make such garments”, Devson added.

“We have known and been stitching garments, that’s a normal thing that we heard till now, but seamless woven garments concept is new, and I was quite surprised to hear about it for the first time. I thought it was some nonsense. But when I verified with Prof. Asha Baxi, the Dean of NIFT, New Delhi, I was pleasantly surprise”, said Mr Rajiv Takru, I.A.S , Director General NIFT. “Change is inevitable, this is major achievement in the textile and garment industry of the world, and it has the potential to bring a whole sea change in the fashion world”

With the unveiling of the seamless woven garments by Yengkhom Devson, it marks the entry and start of a whole new fashion garment line in the world of fashion. He is the sole and first designer in the fashion world to achieve such technique and technology with perfection.

SEAMLESS WOVEN GARMENTS (SWG)

  • Seamless means ‘devoid of any joining or stitching’.
  • Woven garments are made by interlacing multiple yarns call warp and weft on weaving looms.
  • Knitted garments are produced by intertwining yarn or thread in a series of connected loops either by hand, with knitting needles, or on a machine.
  • Seamless garments in knits are already in the market. Most of the products are undergarments.
SWG is a new concept and altogether a new product and first of its kind to hit the market. The product will range from denim jeans, skirts, shirts, gowns etc. to name few.

How SWG is made?

SWG is made by using a new patented machine called "BEMM"

BEMM
Bemm" is a new machine that can weave seamless woven garments.

Advantages and features:
  1. The garments are made directly from yarn
  2. It works manually as of now, to be upgraded to computerize mode soon
  3. Multi-different operations involve in producing garments with seams, which is checked at every stage. For seamless garments, the process involves only two or three operations
  4. The textile and garment industry is under one setup.
  5. Lesser time in making garments
  6. Involvement of fewer professionals in achieving desired results in garment production
  7. Low cost as a result of shorter processing time and involvement few in making garments
Designing advantages:
  1. The whole garment is seamless (meaning no stitching or joining of fabrics)
  2. Garments can be woven using varieties of yarns, weaves and combination
  3. Inbuilt pockets, lining, button hole, excess etc.
  4. Can make garments in straight grain as well in cross (Bias)
  5. Can take different curves and patterns
  6. Placement of motif (during weaving), beads, sequin, buttons etc.
  7. Can create seam like effect too.
  8. Combination of two different fabrics of differing thickness will be easier (e.g. denim patches on silk surface)
  9. The machine can create gathers, pleats, and some unique excesses
  10. Can be of use to scientific community in making e-garments where electronic yarns or circuits can be woven directly to garments for military or civilian use
FAQ on Marketability and Demands of Seamless Products

1. Why would anyone buy seamless product?
* The selling of a product strongly depends on design, exclusivity and not so much on how it is made. Here, as mentioned earlier, the advantages of SWG product over others are it’s uniqueness i.e seamless and faster productivity.which the market is looking for.

2. Where are the demands for seamless products?
* Gap Inc. has unveiled a collection of tagless T-shirts for men under the Gap brand and for women and men at its Banana Republic stores. This follows the launching of its tagless and seamless women's T-shirts sold by Gap Body. Sara Lee Corp. has also launched a tagless bra version of Barely There, a seamless undergarment collection. The company also produces tag-free underwear for men, women, and children under the Hanes brand.

* In 2007 spring, Intertex sold out of its collection of seamless colorful tops called Simply Seamless by Maurice Sasson, which made its debut in 220 stores, including Macy's, a unit of Federated Department Stores Inc. For spring 2005, Intertex plans to add skirts and to distribute its products to as many as 1,500 stores.

* Based on strong sales, fashion company BCBG Max Azria now produces about 40 percent of its knit tops without seams, up from 10 percent two years ago.

3. How are the above products different from SWG products?
* Currently the technique of seamless products exists in knitted wears only. Entering the market with Seamless tag will be a greater advantage as it will be first of its kind and with only one producer.
