Beauty And Production :: Part 2
"beauty lies in the eyes of beholder"

Louriyam Bebica *

Types of beauty

I don't know how scholars term them in to groups. For me, we have two type of beauty
a. Consuming beauty.
b. Complementing beauty.

Un-proportional in the society has made people a beast of greedy where 'the language of possession' only can communicate to their mind. It is called consuming beauty- your realization of beauty is done by consuming it, you don't extent it's beauty .

For instance, if you see a beautiful girl, you will follow her, try to get her number and try to manipulate the beauty. Your only wish was to possess her. Another worst part is - you jump on her at the spot destroying the beauty mercilessly. When we were talking about this type of beauty, my teacher narrated me an incident of his childhood

" it seems there were a couple (an Assamese guy and an Anglo-Indian woman) next to their quarter in Johrat. They had the most wonderful garden in their campus. It was the moon of every one's eyes. None passed the gate without giving a sight at their garden when they passed their quarter. In addition to this, it was visible from the main road, making more bunch of admirers. She (my teacher) loves to wake up and see the garden every morning. One morning when he woke up and walked to peep through the window to see the garden, he was shocked to see the condition. Every flower and grass in that garden was destroyed. They were laying down lifelessly. The reason was - her husband was posted in new place . They have to leave the quarter".

What do you think was she really in love with that beauty? No , she only wanted to possess it. When she cannot, she destroyed them. This beauty consuming is poisonous .

Complementary beauty is hard to coin down in words as such things are a rarity to experience this days. When we see a good dress/anything , the first question that comes to our mind is - wow how much does it cost? Can I have it? I want to have it. Ah ! I 'm desperate to have it.

But no one think who made and how such a beautiful thing is in this world. No one cares on that. Shelley talks of the beauty that can remain unchanged , Keats talks of his imagery beauty. He know that the world is ugly but he denied to compromise it. He created the world of beauty on his imagery world and it was the only truth for him.

In our state it's hard to think and at the same time difficult to realize how could they complement beauty because it's so much unlikely to happen here where jumping on the beauty is what only we know.

Production

"People are made to be loved and things are made to be used. Chaos in this world is because people are used and things are loved".- Mahatma Gandhi

Let me narrate you an interesting story that I came across on joke's book to elaborate on Gandhi's beautiful statement. There was a big businessman . He spend all the time calculating ways and paths to earn more money. One evening he suddenly wake up in a hospital.

Man : Where 'm I ?
Doctor : You are in hospital sir.
Man: What happen? I don't remember anything.
Doctor : Sir you were rushed to hospital unconsciously yesterday night. And 'm sorry to say this ... we had to removed you left hand as its deteriorating condition will affect the rest of your...Before the completion of his words the man suddenly sprang up and scream.
Man :Where is my watch ?

The watch he was wearing on the day of accident, happened to be one of the most expensive in the market. He did not care on losing his own hand instead he was concern about his watch. This story might be a joke but it is true, it's the present happening.

Human being need the process of production to live. It is done by different groups with different products. Later on , it is contributed to one another according to need. For instance, even for making a tiny shirt we need products from different groups - needle , cloths , machine...we can make a complete shirt, only after this. In this process of production we developed a relationship between us - a relation that is bound by love.

But production should be the way that meets our need and develops a relation of love. It should not turn us into 'thing lover'. As Gandhi expressed the reason of this disturbance in the society is because we are in love with THINGS, the THINGS which were made to use and we are using PEOPLE which were supposed to love. Why do we forget the fact that we are human not animal or machine ONLY and ONLY because we are born to love.

I heard a song some days back in campus where it says 'girls don't like boys, girls like cars and money'. I know it was too much to digest but it's true. Now girls don't care who you are. What matters to them is what you have. Saying this I'm not implicating to girls only, it happens same with guys too. What is inside her heart is the least bothered if she has a Korean look in outside, you are ready and happy to date her.

Types of production

Excusing ourselves from the deep philosophical view of Marx's concept on production and its nature, if we have to say in a very simple way, if its made for human need - it is production for human relationship. If its made for profit - it is to establish the power of THING. So generally we can have two types of production

a. Production for use.
b. Production for profit .

In the first one we produced for human used. So it is based on 'human relation'. Here we are concerned on how much we need . It doesn't run after THING. Human relationship is the centre point. Folk songs of villages are the examples of this. Every second they spend on this production, they enjoyed, because this enabled them to strengthen human relationship.

In case of production for profit- it is anti-humanist. The simplest definition for profit is 'exploiting the OTHER'. The simplest example can be those private money lender in our society. In name of 'HELPING LOAN', they normally sucks both blood and sleep of those borrower. This production doesn't concern on human .

For another example, we can have those car companies. They didn't bother to study the capacity of their product in a particular area. What matters to them is profit. It is out of their business whether their cars drives on road or drives on each other due to lack of SPACE. If they sell then that's it. Now THINGS run over us and we run for THINGS. That's why - 'what I'm is what you don't count instead what I have is what you are looking for'.

"the poor are set to labor, for what- not the food for which they famish ; not for the blankets for the want of which their babies are frozen by the cold of their miserable hovels; not those comforts of civilization without which civilized man is far more miserable than the mean savage; oppressed as he by all its insidious evils within the daily and taunting prospect of its enumerable benefits assiduously exhibited before him-not for the pride of power, for the false pleasure of the hundredth part of society"- Shelley.
