With Inputs from Yengkhom Devson *

You might remember Yengkhom Devson Singh from the Fashion articles and updates he contributes to e-pao.net . He is known as Momo amongst his near and dear ones and is the eldest son of Yengkhom Puskar and Yumnam Nalini of Lilong Chajing in Manipur`s Imphal West district, Presently residing at MLA qtrs near MG road.

Yengkhom Devson Singh
This young talented designer is a graduate of NIFT, Mumbai and has earned various accolades such as Women’s Avant Garde award in 2003 New York. Collections for the Durban Fashion week 2006. Recent display of his garments in New Zealand World of wearable art festival from May till October 2007, the garments was a part of last year WOW 2006 show and has been in New Zealand Art museum since then.

He has spent long hours in the research and development in the field of seamless garment making. Being a mechanical engineer himself, he is also adaptive to the world of machinery.

He is coming out with an upgraded machine which was invented while he was in his final year of NIFT 2002, The machine can weave garments seamlessly thus crossing one or more warp of threads at various levels. This will avoid any stitching, inter-locking or joining of pieces of cloths.

This means, it does away with manual and machine intervention in the name of stitches and inter-locking which is ready-to-use on completion of the weave process. Thus, the machine combines the Textile and the Garment industry under one roof or setup. This new generation machine hold promise to herald a new era in garment and textile industries across the globe.

Devson has nicknamed this machine "BEM". The name BEM comes from the name of his sister Victoria as a token of dedication and love for her.

Devson built the initial machine using a wooden structure and has applied for a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization.

The abstract at the WIPO (WIPO is a specialized agency of the United Nations, dedicated to developing a balanced and accessible international intellectual property (IP) system, which rewards creativity, stimulates innovation and contributes to economic development while safeguarding the public interest.)states that:
Seamless Garment Machine sketch

"A seamless woven customized garment devoid of any stitching, inter-locking or joining the cut pieces by any means using any type of yarn, for men, women and children’s wear, including designs, patterns and decorations/accessories is the subject matter of the present invention. Judiciously engaging, disengaging and crossing of one or more warp threads at varied levels weave the seamless garments. The invention also claims a weaving machine adaptable for engaging, disengaging and crossing of warps as per pre-designed patterns. "

"Seamless garments are in vogue and the demand for such garments particularly under garments are increasing. "

"Presently these seamless garments available in the market are knitted one. Woven garments are not available. So the machine BEM and its products will be the first of its kind in the world.

Seamless garment made of tubular material are well known. "

"Additionally one-piece garments particularly seamless under wears are also known and available in the market. Circular knit woolen garments are also known. However, these garments are mostly produced using circular knitting employing lightweight thin yarns. Further, only one yarn is engaged in single rotary knit. "

The advantages of the seamless garment machine are:-
  • Speedy Production
  • Cost effective
  • Minimum Wastage
  • No unwanted stitches
  • Finer Finishing
  • Less Labour
  • No dependence on Textile Mills
  • Freedom of placement of motifs on any part of the garment
  • Freedom to choose, combine or manipulate any kinds of fabrics
  • Easy to handle
  • Custom made garment on the spot ...to name a few.

Notes from the Inventor:

Acknowledgement:

I thank my Parents for there positive backing, in making me what I am today.

My mom openness and her positive outlook have given me the attitude to be a fighter to get what I dream. She is the one who has always given me a good and strong positive vibe to struggle. Though she has come from different generation she adjusted with the new changes. She is the mother that every son or daughter will be proud of. I am proud of her.

My dad, he is one of the simple person with emotional stability. That has made me learn a lot. He never has physically rebuke me but made me a person to see many things of life. He is one person to learn about Non Violence and struggle. He is the one who is satisfied with what he has. I know he was worried about my choice in Fashion as a career at the beginning. But I wanted to bring back his hope and have struggled. And today I think I have. He is a dad I owe my strength and his creativity genes. Thank you dad.

My Sis Victoria, I call her bem, she is my only sis, I cant never say no to her. Its very hard. She has been my advocate to my parents whenever I have to take up new steps. She is more of friend who knows when to say the right word to push me ahead. She has been always by my side, through my odd struggle. She is the soul of my family. She is my Bem.

Status of the machine:
The first prototype was made in wooden form and presently it is being upgraded to work in automatic mode. This is not yet setup physically. Certain circumstances led to the delay but Devson is hopeful of completing the project by end of July 2007. The patent has been granted for the machine, technique and its products.

Media Update:
Devson's alma mater NIFT is organising a Press Conference at Delhi to unveil the machine and the inventor. The machine will be on display for public during this conference.

History:
Devson tells us:
"The machine was invented while I was in NIFT 2002. Mumbai. The long gap has been due to lack of appreciation and funding from both State and National Government Institutes. But luckily, the Ministry of Science and technology, India funded my machine. After I was awarded for the seamless garment, the most innovative product in the Trade fair 2005 at Pragati Maidan New delhi.

I needed help and have requested quite a lot from the State Government to at least help me with loans or scholarship to sustain myself while I concentrate on my machine as I have to leave my normal professional (Fashion Designing) source of earning ... to concentrate on my machine ... and that I still feel unhappy especially with the attitude of our state government ... they may deny now with excuse of me not sending details...:) "
