The Lament of Love’s Deceit
Nicholas Khundrakpam *
In wretched gloom, where broken hearts doth dwell,
A true lover treaded the path of woe,
Betray’d by she whose guile none could foretell,
Once bright, his life now shrouded, dark, and low.
She, pledged to another, her heart untrue,
Did feign affection, false, with wicked art,
And stayed she overnight where shadows grew,
To weave deceit and pierce his trusting heart.
Her vows, like fragile dust, did break away,
And dreams lie scatter’d, lost beyond repair.
Bereft of light, he wandered astray,
Alone, abandoned, drowning in despair.
Midway through life, he roams a hollow shell,
No solace offered, none his pain to bear.
Oh, youthful hearts, beware Love’s fleeting spell,
Its sweetness hides a bitterness unfair.
Turn not thy gaze to Love’s beguiling snare,
For fair it seemed, yet its path may break.
Let not soft whispers lead thee to despair;
Guard well thy soul, for Love is oft a fake.
Seek not in hearts thy worth, but stand alone,
For thou art more than love hath ever shown.
Poet's Note : It is not about any specific individual or group, living or dead. The poem narrates the plight of a devoted lover (poet) who endures heartbreak after being deceived by a beloved who belongs to another. Misled by false promises, he is left to confront the harsh reality of abandonment, resulting in shattered dreams and lost trust. From his sorrow, the poem conveys a cautionary message: while love may seem beautiful, it often conceals hidden pain. True worth and strength arise not from seeking validation through fleeting affections but from remaining steadfast and whole within oneself.
