The Last Step
The Last Step, directed by Monis Lairenlakpam in her debut, has won Best Women’s Film (Short) at the Sittanavasal International Film Festival 2025, February Edition. Produced under Cicada Film Production, the film sheds light on the struggles of two Manipuri dancers, Dyna and Arangbi, as they fight for recognition in a society that often overlooks and stigmatizes performers, especially women in the arts.
The film not only marks Monis Lairenlakpam’s directorial debut but also introduces two new actors, Rabina Kolom and Daina Laitonjam, in their first major roles. Written and produced by Bijou Thaangjam, the film boasts a talented team, with cinematography by Nellish Naoroibam, music by Monish Athokpam, and makeup by Alina Thangjam & Dipiria Huidrom.
Set against the backdrop of Manipur’s rich dance culture, The Last Step highlights the unseen struggles, privilege gaps, and societal prejudices that shape the lives of dancers. With its raw storytelling and thought-provoking narrative, the film continues to spark conversations on the reality of artists in Manipur and the challenges they face in pursuing their passion.
