The 2021 Manipuri film, "SPACED OUT - Panthung Di Kadaaida!" is a poignant and powerful exploration of teenage substance abuse, a critical issue that has often been overlooked in Manipuri cinema. Written, edited, and directed by Priyakanta Laishram, who also stars as the troubled teenager Panthoi Sagolsem, the film is a heartfelt portrayal of the devastating consequences of drug addiction.
The narrative centers around Panthoi, a teenager who falls into the abyss of substance abuse. Laishram's portrayal of Panthoi is both raw and authentic, capturing the harrowing struggles of addiction and the difficulty of breaking free from its grip. The film does not shy away from depicting the painful realities of drug abuse, including the impact on Panthoi's relationships and the irreversible loss of precious moments and loved ones.
One of the film's strengths is its unflinching look at the cycle of addiction. Panthoi's repeated attempts to escape his dependency, only to fall back into it subconsciously, mirrors the real-life challenges faced by many addicts. The film's depiction of this endless loop is both realistic and heart-wrenching, making it a compelling watch for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of substance abuse.
The supporting cast delivers commendable performances, adding depth and nuance to the story. Sachinker Sagolsem, in his debut role as Ngaanba, Panthoi's drug mate, brings a sense of camaraderie and shared despair that highlights the social aspect of addiction.
Equally impressive is Biswajit Saikia as Lanchenba, Panthoi's concerned friend. Saikia's portrayal of unwavering support and helpless frustration underscores the emotional toll addiction takes on those who care about the addict.
Bhani Khamnam shines as Lingjel, Panthoi's elder sister. Her performance captures the anguish and resilience of a sibling trying to save her brother while enduring immense pain herself. Ithoi Oinam as Laija, Panthoi's girlfriend, delivers a standout performance that emphasizes the importance of self-preservation. Laija's journey from a loving partner trying to help Panthoi to a strong woman who stands up for herself is a powerful narrative arc that resonates deeply.
The film's music is another highlight, with two songs that significantly enhance the emotional depth of the story. "Maibemma," composed by Sorri Senjam, poignantly captures Panthoi's struggle with withdrawal symptoms, striking a chord with the audience.
The title song "Panthung Di Kadaaida!" sung by Priyakanta Laishram, is a soulful and emotional piece that lingers long after the film ends, much like the addiction it metaphorically represents. Minor roles played by Harendra Laishram as Panthoi's father and Ramva Leishangthem as Lanchenba's sister add further layers to the narrative.
While the film's cinematography is handled by Jackson Naoroibam, the film is produced by Caroline Laishram under the production banner of Priyakanta Productions. This production team's cohesive vision is evident throughout the film, contributing to its strong visual and narrative appeal.
For Priyakanta Laishram's realistic portrayal of a teen drug abuser, Panthoi, Laishram won Best Actor in a Leading Role, while Sachinker Sagolsem and Bhani Khamnam earned nominations for Best Actor in a Supporting Role Male and Female respectively at the Human Rights & Social Issues Film Festival 2019, Tokyo.
Additionally, Laishram won Best Actor in Drama and Best Screenplay and was nominated for Best Picture in Other Social Issues at the Short & Non-Feature Motion Pictures Wave Festival 2020-2021, Delhi.
However, the film could have been more effective if it had been given more time for character development. Given its runtime of 65 minutes, the film feels somewhat rushed. My only criticism is that the writing could have been more refined and the characters more fully fleshed out if the film had been longer.
A more extended runtime would have allowed for a deeper exploration of the character's backstories and motivations, enhancing the overall impact of the narrative.
In conclusion, "SPACED OUT - Panthung Di Kadaaida!" is a compelling and emotionally charged film that tackles the issue of teenage drug abuse with sensitivity and realism. Priyakanta Laishram's multifaceted involvement in the film—writing, editing, directing, and acting—ensures a cohesive and impactful storytelling experience.
The film's strong performances, poignant music, and unflinching portrayal of addiction make it a significant contribution to Manipuri cinema and an important conversation starter on the consequences of substance abuse. With more time dedicated to character development, the film could have reached even greater heights.
