ONENESS: A Landmark in Manipuri Cinema Breaks Barriers

o ABOUT THE FILM :

o ONENESS, directed by Priyakanta Laishram, is a groundbreaking film that has shattered the glass ceilings in Manipuri cinema. This powerful narrative explores the harsh realities of Manipur society, focusing on the complexities of love and relationships in a conservative society.

The film is inspired by the true story of an 18-year-old boy from a Christian family who was tragically murdered by his family member in 2013. The film features an impressive cast, including Maya Choudhury, Priyakanta Laishram, Suraj Ngashepam, Harendra Laishram, Sachinker Sagolshem, and Ramva Leishangthem, each delivering performances that elevate the film’s compelling storyline.

ONENESS made a strong impact at its Delhi Screening on June 20, 2024, proving that truth resonates with audiences.

Produced by Roushil Singla and Priyakanta Laishram, the film is also notable for its technical excellence, with top-notch sound and visual effects that enhance the overall experience. The film was premiered at the KASHISH Pride Film Festival on May 17, 2024, South Asia’s biggest and one of the most prestigious LGBTQ+ film festivals globally.

ONENESS not only addresses issues of sexuality but also explores themes of women's empowerment and the struggle against societal norms, affirming that love transcends boundaries and defies gender.

Additionally, the film’s subtitles adhere to a universal standard, ensuring that non-Manipuri speakers can fully understand and appreciate the narrative. In scenes where English is spoken, the actors deliver their lines with excellent clarity and pronunciation, making the dialogue accessible and impactful for a broader audience.

o ABOUT THE FILMMAKER:

Priyakanta Laishram is a meticulous filmmaker whose work on ONENESS has set new standards in Manipuri cinema. Known for his dedication, smart work, and critical analysis, Priyakanta has brought a unique vision to this film.

His portrayal of Ivan Martin, the film’s protagonist, stands out as the best performance among the entire cast, showcasing remarkable depth and nuance. His ability to fully inhabit his character made his portrayal one of the most memorable aspects of the film, leaving audiences deeply moved by the climactic scenes.

o ABOUT THE ACTORS:

- Maya Choudhury as Anna Martin:

Maya Choudhury, a seasoned actor in the Manipuri film industry, delivers one of her most powerful performances in ONENESS. As Anna Martin, her portrayal captivated the audience, especially during the film’s emotional climax. Her dialogue delivery and the way she embodied her character left a lasting impression on those who attended the Delhi Screening, moving many to tears.

- Suraj Ngashepam as Pamheiba:

Suraj Ngashepam was well-suited for the role of Pamheiba, bringing a natural fit to his character.

- Harendra Laishram as Peter Martin:

Harendra Laishram’s performance as Peter Martin was commendable. His strong dialogue delivery and vocal tone engaged the audience, though his gestural performance was the highlight.

- Sachinker Sagolsem as Daniel Martin:

Sachinker Sagolsem, mostly known as a YouTuber, surprised many with his portrayal of Daniel Martin. Initially, cinephiles had low expectations, but his performance in ONENESS revealed a depth not seen in his previous work. While his acting was good, it was not the best. There is room for improvement in his gestures and dialogue delivery, but his performance demonstrated significant potential for his future in acting.

- Ramva Leishangthem as Mersia Martin:

Ramva Leishangthem played the role of Mersia Martin with a focus on emotional expression rather than dialogue. Her performance as an innocent, progressive, and understanding character was both charming and poignant, further immersing the audience in the film’s narrative.

o OVERALL REVIEW:

ONENESS is more than just a film; it is a reflection of society’s often-unspoken realities and the ingrained prejudices that exist within it. The film’s impact was evident at its screening, where audience members from diverse backgrounds shared their emotional responses.

A woman, who attended the Delhi Screening, deeply moved by the film’s portrayal of a mother-son relationship, said, “I never knew about these things before, but through this film, I have realized the reality of our society. He is my son, and if he wants to be whoever he wants, I'll surely support him. I can feel the pain of Ivan as a mother.” This moment alone symbolizes the film’s power to break stereotypes and challenge societal norms.

Heterosexual Muslim families also attended the screening and praised the filmmaker for his work, while many others lauded the film for its focus on such a critical and underrepresented topic. ONENESS is the film after MAMI SAMI (2008), directed by Ningthouja Lancha which serves as an eye-opener, particularly for young audiences unfamiliar with the harsh realities, cultural norms and societal status it portrays.

In conclusion, ONENESS is a significant milestone in Manipuri cinema, shedding light on the complexities of human relationships and the societal pressures that often dictate them. It is a film that will be remembered not only for its storytelling and performances but mostly for its cultural impact.
