The film documents the unique cultural event of “Pham Kaaba”, an accession ceremony of one of the twelve village headmen of Kwatha. At its core, the movie revolves around the concept of loyalty of the people of Kwatha to the community and its traditions. The fact that the event where village leaders rise to positions of authority is the region's biggest festival reflects a deep sense of responsibility and accountability of the people.
The setting of Kwatha is captured with striking authenticity, showcasing the people, food, attire, customs, way of life, beliefs, and emotions in a true-to-life manner.
The film masterfully portrays the rich cultural heritage of the village, while also shedding light on the socio economic challenges of living in a remote hilltop area, far removed from urban conveniences. Despite various challenges, they lead fulfilling lives and exhibit genuine happiness, a sentiment flawlessly captured in the film. Being a border state near Myanmar, the film also reflects Myanmar’s influence in terms of clothing and lifestyle.
The film encapsulates the essence of the people’s unwavering commitment to preserving their traditions and cultural roots, while subtly incorporating the elements of globalization. This blend adds an aesthetic dimension to their way of life, symbolizing the harmony between tradition and modernity. One particularly notable aspect is the ambient sounds brilliantly captured, adding to the authenticity of “Kwatha Sana Leipak”, as described by one of the villagers.
The film stirs a powerful emotional reaction among viewers, shedding light on the lost sense of connection and responsibility to the community in today’s fast-paced, work-focused world. The documentary seems to provoke the desire to rebuild a deep sense of belongingness and loyalty to one’s community. It concludes with a hopeful scene, illustrating the passing of traditions and culture to the younger generation.
