A team of two students from the Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) Department of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Manipur, has brought laurels to the institute by winning the Best Design Award at the 38th International Conference on VLSI Design 2025 held at Leela Palace, Bengaluru recently.
The team, comprising Bame Chandam and Korounganbi Kangjam, was guided by Prof Aheibam Dinamani Singh and Dr Wangkheirakpam Vandana Devi of the ECE department. In a statement, NIT Manipur informed that the students developed a Helmet Detection System for two-wheeler vehicles using the AM62A Arm-based application processor sponsored by Texas Instruments.
"The system is designed to enhance road safety by automatically locking the ignition for riders without helmets. With two-wheelers accounting for approximately 70 per cent of the automobile market, the proposed system is believed to hold significant market potential as it addresses critical safety concerns while aligning with safety regulations and increasing the marketability of vehicles," elaborated the institute.
Hosted by the VLSI Society of India, and sponsored by leading multinational companies, including NXP, MICROCHIP, MARVELL, Synopsys, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and Ansys, the conference themed "Silicon meets AT" attracted global visionaries and thought leaders from industry and academia, including Chris Miller, author of the acclaimed book "Chip War: The Fight for the World's Most Critical Technology", maintained the statement.
Out of over 100 teams from reputed institutes such as IITs, NITs, IIITs, and VIT participated in the Design Contest, 15 teams shortlisted for hardware implementation, with the choice of kits from three platforms - NXP, MICROCHIP, and Texas Instruments. The contest was judged by industry leaders, including Microchip India vice-president Srikanth Settikere.
NIT Manipur team emerged victorious, securing the Best Design Award for their innovative Helmet Detection System. Director Prof DVLN Somayajulu, along with faculty and staff, congratulated the award-winning team and their mentors, Prof A Dinamani Singh and Dr W Vandana Devi, for their outstanding achievement, the statement added.
