Thokchom Sheityajit, the first position holder in arts stream of the Higher Secondary Examination 2024 conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM), has set his sights on a career in civil services through the UPSC examinations.
A student of Enlighten Knowledge Higher Secondary School in Sangakpham, Sheityajit is the eldest son of Thokchom Nobochand and Karam Reena of Kongpal Kongkham Leikai, Imphal East.
His father, Nobochand, runs a grocery store at their residential gate, while Reena works as a clerk at the Veterinary Department.
Sheityajit scored 477 out of 500 marks top the exam in the arts stream.
In an exclusive interview with The People's Chronicle, Sheityajit attributed his success to unwavering support of his teachers and parents. Conceding that he had not expected to rank first, the topper said he had firm belief in his ability to excel in all subjects.
He commenced preparations for the examination in May last year by opting to reside in the school hostel to focus on his studies.
Sheityajit actively participated in the residential coaching classes conducted in his school in December, eschewing additional coaching classes in favour of dedicated self-study sessions. His routine included average of 3 to 4 hours of study daily, occasionally extending to 5 to 6 hours.
Addressing the ongoing crisis in the state that erupted in May last year, Sheityajit emphasised the importance of maintaining focus and resilience amidst adversity.
He expressed solidarity with all communities and students impacted by the crisis, and stressed the need to persevere in pursuit of academic goals despite challenging circumstances.
Refusing to allow the crisis to derail his studies, Sheityajit remained steadfast in his dedication and urged fellow students to adopt a positive mindset and remain committed to their aspirations.
Looking towards the future, Sheityajit revealed his aspirations to pursue a degree in history honours at Delhi University and ultimately embark on a career in civil services through the UPSC examinations.
