NOTIFICATION
In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint
Shri Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh,
Chief Justice,
High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh,
to be a Judge of the Supreme Court of India,
with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.

In a first from Manipur...N Kotiswar elevated to SC
Justices N Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan were Tuesday elevated as Judges of the Supreme Court, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced on X . Justice Singh's elevation marks the first representation from the Manipur in the Supreme Court.
He was initially appointed a Judge of the Gauhati High Court in 2011.In 2013, Justice Singh was transferred to the Manipur HC (his parent High Court) when the Court was established. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court in February 2023 and is due to retire on February 28, 2025 .
With his elevation, he will now have additional three years of tenure. The All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) has thanked God for conferring a rare opportunity to Justice N Kotiswar to serve the Nation as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. AMBA also wished the newly appointed Supreme Court Judge a bright future.
Meanwhile, Justice Mahadevan is at present the acting chief justice of the Madras High Court. Once they take oath, the Supreme Court will regain its sanction strength of 34 .
The Indian Express had earlier reported that the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the names of Justice Singh and Justice Mahadevan to fulfill two vacancies, occasioned by the retirement of Justice Aniruddha Bose on 10 April, 2024 and of Justice A S Bopanna on 19 May, 2024 .
