May 3rd observed as "Resistance Day" at Bangalore
The Manipuri Meitei Association, Bangalore solemnly observed May 3rd as Resistance Day—a day marking the beginning of one of the darkest chapters in Manipur’s history.
On this day, Kuki militants, including groups under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement, launched coordinated attacks on innocent civilians, burning homes and displacing thousands. These acts of terror were carried in the pretext of protesting a legitimate order by the Hon'ble Manipur High Court.
May 3rd also marks the height of unchecked cross-border infiltration, drastically altering the demographic landscape of the state due to a surge in illegal Kuki immigrants. It is a day when civilians across the state raised their voices against Kuki narco-terrorism and the systematic assault on the integrity and to destabilize Manipur’s social fabric.
Going forward, this day will be remembered and observed as Resistance Day—a solemn reminder of the resilience of the people of Manipur and Meitei in particular and their collective stand against terrorism, drug, poppy plantation, illegal immigration, and attempts to destabilize the state from within in defending the state’s integrity, culture, and future.
The Association Appeals to the Government to Take Urgent Actions:
1. Restore Law and Order: Identify and punish those responsible for the May 3rd violence, particularly organizations such as the Committee on Tribal Unity (a Kuki group), that incited and organized the attacks.
2. Secure National Highways: Ensure the free movement of goods and citizens without interference from militant groups. The current blockade has triggered an economic crisis, especially in Imphal, by pushing essential commodity prices to unbearable levels.
3. Abrogate the SoO Agreement with Kuki Militants: The SoO agreements have been misused to perpetuate violence. Immediate withdrawal is essential to restore lasting peace.
4. Implement NRC in Manipur: Initiate the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process to safeguard indigenous rights, preserve demographic balance, and protect political stability (Refer Annexure A).
5. Dismantle Artificial Buffer Zones: Remove enforced divisions that separate communities and delay reconciliation. Priority must be given to ensuring the dignified return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their homes.
A Call for Justice and Restoration
The Manipuri Meitei Association, Bangalore, urges the Hon’ble Government of India to act decisively and urgently. Resistance Day is not merely a remembrance of the past, but a call to build a future anchored in peace, justice, and the rightful dignity of the people of Manipur.
