Hon'ble the Chief Justice, High Court of Manipur at Sadbhavna Mandap Relief Camp, Kangpokpi
On June 18, 2025, Hon’ble Mr. Justice K. Somashekar, Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur visited the Mandap Sadbhavna Relief Camp, Kangpoki District.
During the visit, Hon’ble the Chief Justice & Hon’ble Judges of the High Court interacted with the IDPs and distributed essential relief items. These includes Jumbo boxes, double folding mosquito nets, torch lights with lamps, Radio, diapers, buckets, mugs, infant milk, sanitary pads, soap, detergent, as well as sports and recreational items such as footballs, volleyballs, badminton, skipping ropes, toys for children.
During the interaction programme, Hon’ble Mr. Justice K. Somashekar, Chief Justice, underscored the crucial role played by legal services institutions in promoting access to justice, especially for the vulnerable and marginalized groups.
In his remarks, the Hon’ble Chief Justice emphasized the constitutional guarantees enshrined in Articles 13 and 14 of the Constitution of India, reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to uphold the rule of law and the rights of all citizens and equality before the law to all persons within the territory of India. The Chief Justice also expressed that the efficiency of justice delivery would significantly improve if Kangpokpi district is granted the status of a judicial district.
As a part of awareness programme, Shri Alek Muivah, Member Secretary, MASLSA highlighted the availability of free legal aid under Section 12 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, and the categories of eligible persons to receive legal assistance at free of cost.
He also informed the gathering about the provisions for victim compensation implemented through the District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) and MASLSA, aimed at providing financial relief and support to victims of crime. He also stated that the office of MASLSA is planning to soon expand Legal Aid Defense Counsel System in five hill districts including Senapati which will strengthen the legal aid services in criminal matters facilitated by the Manipur State Legal Services Authority.
The visit was attended by several dignitaries and officials, including Mr. Alek Muivah, Member Secretary, MASLSA; Mr. Lamkholal Kipgen, District & Sessions Judge, Senapati & Chairman DLSA Senapati; Mr. Robert Lhumgdim, JMFC, Kangpokpi, Mr. J. Hilson Angam Deputy Registrar (Judl.), High Court of Manipur, Mr. Sheikh Asif Shah, JMFC, Mao; Members of District Bar Association Kangpokpi as well as Senapati & All Tribal
Lawyers Association, Manipur with other officials. From the district administration, DC, Kangpokpi, SP, Kangpokpi and other officers participated.
