The Thadou Students' Association, General Headquarters, has welcomed the state government's decision to hand over the investigation of repeated arson and terror attacks on the iconic indigenous Thadou leader, Mr. Michael Lamjathang Haokip, to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The well-coordinated attacks, which occurred on May 7, 2023, August 25, 2024, and August 31, 2024, were allegedly carried out by armed Kuki Militants likely to be those operating within Kangvai to Tuibong area in Churachandpur district.
TSA has written a letter to the leadership of the KNO and its armed groups (including the KNA, KNF(S) KNF-MC, KNF-Z & KLA) in connection with the attacks, which took place in the area dominated by these groups. However, only one group among them, that is, the KNF (S) has so far responded to the letter, clarifying their non-involvement in the attacks.
The fact that the other groups have neither condemned the repeated terror attacks nor clarified on the matter only strengthen the suspicion of their involvement in the attacks, which would clearly amount to gross violation of the ground rules of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement between the groups and the government.
The association emphasizes the importance of protecting peace-loving and peace-advocating Thadou leaders, like Mr. Michael, for the future of Manipur and India's national interest, integrity and security. Retired Lt. Gen. RP Kalitha has also raised concerns about the state police's ineffectiveness in Hill districts particularly Churachandpur district, both before and after the crisis began.
To prevent further violence, government security forces of both the state and the centre must restore law and order in hill areas particularly at Churachandpur district and prove that the Indian constitution and the laws of the land do exist in practice. This will give confidence to the public that the government is committed to ensuring public safety, peace and stability.
With the NIA now handling the case, there's hope that the perpetrators' intentions and masterminds will be exposed, and justice will be served to all the victims of the horrible crime and injustice, including Michael Lamjathang, his family and Peniel villagers. The Thadou people see justice for Michael Lamjathang, his family and Peniel Thadou village as justice for the whole Thadou community and eagerly wait that day.
