Observance of National Sports Day

Department of Physical Education and Sports Science, Fit India Campaign Committee (FICC), and Fit India Club (FIC), Manipur University, Canchipur has organised “Observance of National Sports Day and Bicycle Rally” on the theme "Sport for the Promotion of Peaceful and Inclusive Societies” today, the 29th August, 2024 at 7:00 A.M. at the Traffic Point, MU, Canchipur as part of Fit India Movement with Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, Olympian, Silver Medalist-Tokyo 2020 and 4th Place –Paris 2024, Prof. M. Premjit Singh, Chairman, FICC, FIC and Dean, Students Welfare, Manipur University, Prof. L. Thambal Singh, Head, PESS, MU, Prof. Dr. Sanjib Singh Nepram, Bicycle Mayor and Medical Superintendent, RIMS, Imphal, Prof. Premlata Maisnam, Dean, School of Education, Manipur University, Canchipur gracing the function as Chief Guest, Special Guest, Guests of honours and President respectively.
At the beginning of the observance programme, a floral tribute has been given to the Hockey Legend, Major Diyan Chand as National Sports Day is being observed on his birth day. As a token of appreciation for her performance in the Paris Olympic, a memento has been given to Saikhom Mirabai Chanu by Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University and Prof. W. Chandbabu Singh, Registrar, Manipur University.
Dr. Laishram Santosh Singh, convenor, FICC and FIC, MU, Canchipur has welcomed all the respected dignitaries and invitees. He highlighted the theme and importance of observing National Sports Day and Bicycle Rally.
Prof. Dr. Sanjib Singh Nepram, Bicycle Mayor and Medical Superintendent, RIMS, Imphal as a Guest of Honour of the Observance, sought the contribution from all to make Manipur University Campus a Free Vehicle Zone and asked the students to develop the culture of going to their respective schools, colleges and university by riding the bicycle.
Prof. L. Thambal Singh, Head, Department of Physical Education and Sports Science has appreciated all the participants of today’s Observance of National Sports Day and encouraged to develop a habit of doing physical activities regularly.
Prof. M. Premjit Singh, Chairman, FICC, FIC and Dean, Students Welfare, Manipur University has expressed that in order to have a strong mental health, there is a need for a good physical health.
In her deliberation as Special Guest, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, Olympian encouraged everyone to spend for physical activities for one hour in the morning every day to remain active throughout the day. Concerning her 4th place in the recent Paris Olympic, she expressed that every sportsperson should always remain positive and work tirelessly as winning and losing are the parts of sports.
As the Chief Guest of the Observance, Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University observed that in the past every household used to have bicycles, but nowadays as an impact of urbanisation, people have started preferring motor bikes and cars for day to day conveyance. He also mentioned that to encourage use of bicycle, there are 100 bicycles which can be used by the students and faculties inside the campus with the establishment of Bicycle Club. He also emphasised on the need to remain fit and healthy to avoid the health related problems.
The President of the Observance, Prof. Premlata Maisnam, Dean, School of Education, Manipur University appreciated every participant for making the programme a grand success.
As a part of the Observance of National Sports Day, a bicycle rally has organised, which was led by dignitaries and invitees, followed by participants. Around 300 cyclists of the state have participated including a team of cyclists from Manipur Adventure and Mountain Biking Association (MAAMBA) under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Sanjib Singh Nepram, Bicycle Mayor and Medical Superintendent, RIMS, Imphal took part in the Cycle Rally. The bicycle rally has been started from Manipur University, passing through Kangla Gate, BT Road, Wahengleikai, Keisampat, and returning to Manipur University.
Dr. Ksh. Ranjan Singh, member, Fit India Club, Manipur University, proposed the vote of thanks to the participants, MAAMBA, and others for their support and necessary helps in the smooth conducting of the programme.
