The Rengpang Development Women Society organized a One Day Seminar on "Human Rights under the Constitution of India and Empowering Women: Challenges and Prospects in Rongmei Society" at the Community Hall in Rengpang on July 24, 2024. Mr. Poujiabthai Gangmei (Zeppuh), Advocate at the Meghalaya High Court, served as the Resource Person for the event.
The seminar featured two sessions. In the first session, Mr. Gangmei emphasized that human rights are intrinsic and available to all individuals from birth to death. He elaborated on the various facets of human rights under the Constitution of India, focusing on Fundamental Rights which are enforceable.
He discussed the importance and wide scope of the Right to Life and personal liberty, highlighting these as inalienable rights of citizens. Additionally, he touched upon various aspects of rights outlined in the Directive Principles of State Policy.
The second session focused on women's empowerment. Mr. Gangmei explained that women's empowerment is about maximizing the utilization of rights available to women, encompassing social, political, and economic dimensions.
He noted that despite the Rongmei tradition of honoring women, there are challenges such as illiteracy, early marriage, and lack of awareness of legal rights that hinder women's empowerment. He stressed the importance of utilizing legislation related to women's rights and becoming informed citizens to achieve maximum empowerment.
The sessions concluded with a question-and-answer interaction where participants cleared their doubts. The seminar was well-attended, primarily by women, as well as village elders and student leaders.
