Haipei Rani Gaidinliu Sports Meet at Shillong

The inaugural Haipei Rani Gaidinliu Sports Meet, organized by Rongmei Phwam Shillong and Rongmei Chamnac Phwam Shillong, commenced today the 1st November, 2024 at Divine Savior Parish Ground, Nongthymmai, Shillong.

The event pays tribute to Padma Shri Rani Gaidinliu, a revered freedom fighter and socio-religious leader from the Rongmei Naga tribe in Northeast India.

The opening ceremony was honored by the presence of Smt. Hannah Kahmei, IAS, Director of Tribal Affairs & Hills, Government of Manipur. Over the next two days, participants will engage in a range of sports and traditional indigenous games cherished by the Rongmei Naga community.

Rani Gaidinliu, known for her spirited resistance against colonial rule, was imprisoned multiple times before her eventual release following India’s independence. Her courage and leadership earned her the title “Rani” from India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. This event is held in her memory to celebrate her legacy and inspire future generations.
