Thadou Community International (TCI) strongly condemns the heinous attack on Zairawn village under Jiribam district of Manipur on the night of November 7, 2024 by suspected Meitei militants. This unjustifiable act of violence is unacceptable and has caused immense harm to the delicate law and order situation in the area.
We are utterly appalled and saddened to learn that in the gruesome attack, Mrs. Zosangkim, a mother of three children, belonging to Hmar tribe and a resident of Zairawn village, was brutally killed beyond words to describe. The attack has also caused displacement of the villagers including children and old aged people, besides destruction of properties.
We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and stand in solidarity with Zairawn villagers. We demand that the authorities take immediate action to bring the perpetrators to justice without fail and to ensure the safety and security of the village.
It is very unfortunate that this happened at a time when the situation in Manipur when there seemed to be a gleam of hope in working an understanding between communities in Jiribam area. Peace agreement and peace process must be kept and maintained by all to bring lasting peace and normalcy in the interest of all.
As a society we must stop falling prey to the vested interest and evil agenda of a few, who probably think they benefit from violence at the cost of innocent lives. We all need to reflect and ask what benefit this violence brings to our society in any manner. The longer this violence lingers, it will only bring more harm to the affected people, who are already impoverished and lacking in many aspects of life and development.
Strong measures must be taken to prevent such attacks in the future by deploying security forces in key locations. Erring authorities must be made accountable for failing to prevent this kind of barbaric action.
The concerned government authorities and public from all communities must work together in the most proactive way for confidence and peace-building measures and to prevent escalation of violence and recurrence of similar attacks.
TCI would like to call upon all right-thinking people and civil organizations to condemn this senseless violence and to work for a peaceful and secure environment for all.
Statement: “ Thadou is a distinct ethnic group of people. Thadou is not Kuki, or underneath Kuki, or part of Kuki, but a separate, independent entity from Kuki. Any organisation that incorporates “Thadou” but espouses Kuki and mis-portrays Thadou as Kuki or a part of Kuki is illegitimate and does not represent Thadou people and interest ” – Thadou Convention 2024.
