85th Nupi Lal Memorial Function at Pune
The Association of Manipuri Diaspora (AMAND), Pune, registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 in Pune, Maharashtra, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization established by working and retired Manipuri professionals residing in and around Pune.
On Sunday, December 15, 2024, AMAND Pune observed the 85th Nupi Lal Memorial Function, honoring the courage and sacrifice of then brave women of Manipur who revolted against British colonial rule to oppose discriminatory and unjust policies. The event was held at the MCCIA Auditorium in Hadapsar, Pune, at 3:00 PM.
The function commenced with a warm welcome from AMAND Vice President, Shri Irom Jiten, who greeted the Chief Guest, the renowned Melody Queen of Manipur, Smt. Laishram Mema Devi; the Guest of Honor, Smt. Bageshree Ponkshe of Jnana Prabodhini; and the AMAND President, Shri Er. Ch. Jayanta Singh.

The program began with a floral tribute to the bravery of the women of Manipur, led by dignitaries, along with senior AMAND members, and other invitees. This was followed by an address from AMAND General Secretary, Mr. Suresh Chingtham, who narrated the historical events of the Nupi Lal movements of 1904 and 1939, highlighting their significance in the history of Manipur.
Subsequently speeches were delivered by the Guest of Honor, the Chief Guest, and the AMAND President. The Chief Guest (Smt. Laishram Mema Devi) was magnanimous enough to present couple of songs after her speech.
The event continued with various activities, including display of sketches and paintings by the children of AMAND members, heart rending recitations by AMAND ladies and children highlighting the sacrifices made by the courageous women of Manipur.
A special segment of the program featured a poignant one-act play titled Ima, presented by the AMAND Ladies Club (ALC). Inspired by the Nupi Lal, the play paid a heartfelt tribute to the courageous mothers of Manipur.
The program concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by the second Vice President of AMAND Col Thingujam Jotin Singh (retired)
