3rd Day at Tribal Futures Festival: Annu and Manasi Highlight Impact of Film and Music on Tribal Communities.
On the third day, August 3rd, of the month-long Tribal Futures online festival organized by the Tribal Design Forum, a discussion was held on how film and music can influence and inspire the issues and sentiments of members from tribal communities.
In the first session of this discussion, Annu Bagmare, a Gond community member from central India, showcased her documentary film 'Ek Shiksha Aisi Bhi'. Her documentary documents her efforts to empower forest-dwelling tribal communities in the fringe villages of Kanha National Park. This process has been carried out through contextual education and nature-based livelihoods.
The film highlights initiatives to improve foundational learning, develop contextual educational modules, and enhance teachers' capacity to deliver quality education in 14 villages of Gond and Baiga Tribal Community. It emphasizes integrating local knowledge and environmental awareness into the curriculum, fostering a deeper connection between students and their natural surroundings. After the film, Annu engaged the audience in a Q&A session.
In the second session, Mansi Josephin Ba from Goa participated. Mansi is a musician from the Oraon community. During the discussion, Mansi shared her personal journey of discovering her tribal identity and roots in her early years. Having grown up in a city, she was distant from her roots but when she explored them, she used music as a medium to express her feelings.
During the discussion, Mansi also presented a live musical performance. Her music is available at Spotify. Mansi is an inspiration for young people from the tribal community who have grown up in cities away from their roots and who want to not only reconnect with their roots but also grow out of them.
