Renowned Climate and Environmental Activist from Manipur Licypriya Kangujam likely to miss the crucial United Nations Climate Conference 2023, also known as COP28 due to lack of funds. The conference will kick off on November 30 till December 12 in Expo City Dubai hosted by the UAE with the United Nations.
PM Modi and other world leaders will attend the climate summit to decide the fate of the future of our planet and specially to activate the loss and damage funds adopted last year in COP27 for the poor
vulnerable countries. total of about 60,000 delegates from 190 countries will attend this year’s climate conference in Dubai.
Licypriya is the only Manipuri going to attend the event. Her approach to the Government for funding goes in vain as they go blind and deaf ears to her voice. And they still failed to recognize her global efforts in fighting climate change and saving our planet from a very young age.
Previously, Licypriya was sponsored by European Climate Foundation to attend the COP25 Spain, COP26 UK and COP27 Egypt from 2019. This year, ECF failed to sponsor her as funds were exhausted. Licypriya started being recognized by the world after her address at the United Nations Climate Conference (COP25) 2019 held in Madrid, Spain. She is playing a crucial role in lobbying the world leaders to adopt various agreements including creating a loss and damage funds last year during the COP27.
Licypriya posted in her facebook that, “If any generous person can sponsor her travel expenses to attend the COP28, they can contribute in her GPay Number: 6009059349. Till date, around 2 lakhs raised out of around 4 lakhs requirements through crowdfunding.
It can be noted that she spent all her savings in helping the displaced people due to the ongoing crisis between Kukis and Meiteis in Manipur and also in giving education to the victim children. Usually, UN events are se;f sponsored though they extend invitations to the people.
Recently, Licypriya life journey appears in CBSE syllabus of Class 3 and Class 7 in English Textbook by dedicating 6 pages in a separate chapter giving the title “Child Hero”. The President of India also signed an ordinance in 2021 to enact a new air pollution law in India after her protest for a week in front of the President House in New Delhi.
Licypriya has been recognized for her efforts in raising awareness about climate change and its impact on the planet. She has been actively involved in the global climate change movement and has been campaigning for various environmental causes, including air pollution, climate education and plastic waste reductions.
She frequently confronted world leaders for climate justice and to pay for the loss and damage caused by the climate crisis to the global south. She is also known for her “Child Movement” campaign, which aims to empower children to take action against climate change and inspire others to join the movement.
Licypriya also addressing the Manipur conflict by meeting various world leaders from King Charles III of UK to His Holiness Pope Francis, Head of the Christian Religion to show Meitei never started the
ongoing war in Manipur and to stop massive deforestation by Kukis to plant poppy drugs causing the global climate crisis.
