Freedom of the press is widely regarded as the fourth pillar of democracy.
It empowers journalists to hold power accountable, amplify public voices, and ensure the free flow of information.
In Manipur, especially during the 2023 unrest, the press took on a vital role. Journalists delivered impactful ground reporting, with small newspapers playing an exceptional part.
Even today, they continue to inform and shape the state's social and cultural landscape.

(Transcription) We have the freedom to practice our professional journalism, that is popularly termed as a fourth pillar of democracy. Even if in a small way, we are contributing to the growth of the local communities here by engaging them in propagating their culture, their language, and being like a bridge between the people and the community.
These newspapers are vital to local communities, preserving culture and fostering social harmony.
They boldly report issues, raise public concerns, and expose system flaws.
Published in local languages, their broad reach strengthens community ties.
Papers like The Tamenglong Times also play a key role in promoting communal peace and cohesion.

Editor, The Tamenglong Times
(Transcription) In Tamenglong, the Meiteis are here, the Kukis are here. They are living peacefully. And why do they live peacefully? Because there is no rumour. There are no people sightings of violence here. So in the same way, if there are no sightings, no fake news, I think the situation will come back to normal. Because everyone wants to have a normal life, a peaceful life.
In a strong democracy, the press speaks the truth, asks tough questions, and holds power to account.
In Manipur, the press continues to fulfil this role with resilience and impact.

(Transcription) We can run our paper free and fair, we don’t have any problem with the government authority. I think government authority is very cooperative.
In Manipur, newspapers and news portals — big and small — are playing a strong and effective role.
From the capital Imphal to remote areas like Tamenglong, the media acts as a watchdog, exposing gaps in governance and reminding the system of its duties.
