Meet Pamchuiwon Kashak Hungyo, a 31-year-old artisan from Kamjong, Manipur, who is reviving Tangkhul traditional ornaments.
What began as a hobby in 2016—crafting earrings and necklaces—has grown into a thriving business that celebrates heritage and empowers others.

Translation: I never received formal training; everything I’ve learned is self-taught. Coming from a farming family with limited financial means, I grew up without many clothes or ornaments. We couldn’t afford them, even if we wanted to. This inspired me to start making my own accessories, especially since traditional pieces — particularly wedding accessories — are often very expensive.
Despite being the second of eleven siblings and facing challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, Pamchuiwon stayed determined.
Her resilience paid off in October 2024 with the launch of Tangkhul Beads preserving cultural heritage through handcrafted jewelry amid rising Korean fashion influences.

(Translation) Our unique traditional attire reflects our roots and identity, and this is the core aim of Tangkhul Beads. Unfortunately, despite our rich heritage, many in the younger generation are increasingly influenced by Western and Korean fashion. It is important that we appreciate and recognize the beauty of our vibrant traditional attire and work to preserve our cultural identity.
Peace and development in Manipur are enabling artisans like Pamchuiwon to thrive, creating jobs for young women and preserving tradition through craftsmanship.
From Kongsang necklaces to Khommasin bridal ornaments, each piece reflects Tangkhul heritage and resilience — offering hope for local talent and cultural revival.
