PREFACE

Tourists and travellers, specially the outsiders, long after and are curious about to know the land or places they visit and the people about their culture, history and social character. In most cases, they have become lay readers with various interests and enjoy the pleasure and leisure during their limited sojourn. Very frequently they get themselves dismayed and dishearten while trying to meet their thirsty needs and quest for information and knowledge about the land and the people. It is a common parlance during their visit to far flung sites and spots unless any relevant account, be it in the form of literature, booklet or exclusive work is found about the sites of their visit. The same is found in the case of the naturally endowed lake town of Moirang, a historical and cultural site in the state of Manipur. More pertinently, there is no English publication on the land and the people of Moirang, inclusive and exclusive in character. In our modern scientific age it is a big missing gap.

Positively inspired by the shortcomings and largely guided by holistic views the author has made an attempt to produce a blurred histo-cultural image of Moirang and this too, may not be upto the satisfaction of exhaustive tourist readers. Secondly, in this attempt a glance on the unlimited glimse of Eputhou Thangching and His Salwon and Langon is thrown to construct a foundation about the origin and historicity of the people of Moirang. Considering such dual purpose the book is aptly entitled "Moirang and Eputhou Thangching"

This book, to be found in neither a biggish nor a flimsy volume is the first of its kind. If it happens to be a design or model book for some other purposes like a handbook of guides to the sparkling natural beauties, to the pious places of worship, to the historical sites in house research in future etc. the author would certainly remain indebted to those readers. Nothing scholarly work is within the contents of this book. It is a simple collection of strayed facts and rudiments of Moirang, the past and the present.

All along the preparation of its manuscript and bringing out of the book, I can not but pay homage to the bygone Maichous (scholars) of Thangjing Yageirel Marup, Moirang and thanks to the present members whose inducement and help made me participate in seminars, local and state as a paper reader as well as a moderator sometimes. The spirited encouragements are also from friends and relatives in the grown up stage of this book for which I shall not ever forget. The last touch of the book in a scientific and systematic way is from Shri Y. Modhu Singh, HOD (Political Science), Moirang College, Moirang and others. The retouch exercises have beautified the work to a considerable extent. The last minute encouragement came from Shilabati Chanu, the only daughter of the author who took financial responsibility to bear all expenses to be incurred in the publication of this volume.

Lastly, print works done by M/s Mellei Press, Moirang are awesome. All weakness of the author ever since the manuscript was handed over to him was improved many times over. It is because of this extra-efforts of the proprietor that the get up and cover design look attractive and revealing.

The author wishes to record very sincere thanks to all friends and others including those not mentioned here.
