Chaga Ngee : Post-harvest Festival celebrated by Liangmai Naga Tribe
Chaga Ngee greetings from the Office of Liangmai Naga Katimai Ruangdi, Manipur.
The Indigenous Liangmai Tribe is a recognized Scheduled tribe enlisted in the ST list vide Constitution Order (Amendment) Act, 2011, republished in Manipur Gazette No. 838, dated March 27, 2012.
The Liangmai community lives across various districts of Manipur, namely Tamenglong, Senapati, Kangpokpi, Noney, Imphal West, and Imphal East, with a sizable population of approximately 70,000.
During the month of Chaga Hiu, based on the lunar calendar, usually in October, Chaga Ngee is celebrated by young and old.
It is a post-harvest festival celebrated by the Liangmai Naga Tribe.
This festival is a time to:
- Purify society and warriors
- Seek blessings from Tingwang, the supreme God
- Determine individual luck
- Give thanks
- Sanctify
Marking the occasion as unique and significant, the Government of Manipur, as ordered by the Governor on December 2, 2021, declared October 30 as a restricted holiday in the state.
Therefore, pursuant to the government order, and to commemorate the remarkable Chaga Ngee, the union hereby appeals to all educational institutions within the Liangmai Naga jurisdiction to declare a holiday on October 30 in honor of Chaga Ngee Day.
The union further appeals to all educational institutions' administrations in Manipur to exempt Liangmai students from attending colleges and schools on this special day, October 30, in solidarity with Chaga Ngee.
All education institutions are requested to extend maximum cooperation and compliance.
