Immigrations into Manipur - an overview

The total scenario of migration by districts was shown above; however, a serious problem would be migration of rural elites to the urban areas. A picture of the rural -urban migration in 2001 was as given below.

Excludes 3(three) Sub-divisions of Senapati District.It was observed that the total migrant population as recorded in 2001 census was 3,77,059 which constituted 17.40 per cent of State population excluding Mao-Maram, Paomata and Purul sub-divisions of Senapati district. Of the total migrants. only 16,201 were recorded to be immigrants (influx to Manipur from outside the state of Manipur).

It was worked out to be 4.30 per cent of the total migrants and 0.75 per cent of the total population. It was found out that as many as 3,60,858 persons were migrated from one place to other within the state. It was 95.70 in terms of percentage to total migrants. Intra-district migrants was found to be 3,01,196 as 'against 59, 662 inter-district migrants which constituted 83.47 per cent and 16.53 per cent respectively to the total migrations taken place within the State.

It was a surprising fact that rural to urban migration was comparatively lesser than the migration from rural to other rural areas of Manipur. Rural to rural migration was 1,55,236 as against 27,292 migrants who moved from rural to urban areas of Manipur. On the other hand, migration from urban to rural was recorded to be 9,565 as against 32,699 migrations from urban to other urban areas of Manipur.

Of the total migrations taken place within Manipur, the destination of 2,67,751 persons were found to be rural areas of Manipur where the destinations of 93,107 persons were urban areas of Manipur. In the other words, the rural destination migrants within the State of Manipur was found to be 74.20 per cent to the total migrants who changed their place of residence where urban destination migrants' share was found to be only 25.80 per cent

2. Immigrants from other States/UTs of India to Manipur, 2001 Census

It would be interesting to know the origin and destination of the immigrants as recorded during the population Census conducted in 2001. As already stated, the migration details had been collected for each individual by place of birth and place of last residence.

The duration of residence in the place of enumeration was classified into 6 (six) categories such as less than 1 year, (1-4) years, (5-9) years, (10-19) years, (20+) years and duration not stated. The total immigration (i.e. taking all categories of durations) was considered for the present analysis. Migration may be taken place with or without females. Therefore, both the genders were accounted in the tabular analysis presented below:
