National Webinar on Tokyo Olympics 2020 :: Report

National Sports University (NSU), Manipur, organised a day long national webinar on Tokyo Olympics 2020- India's Journey and Expectations' on 3 July 2021. The webinar was inaugurated by Padma Bhushan and Dronacharya Awardee P. Gopichand as Chief Guest of the webinar and presided by Shri R. C. Mishra, LAS (Retd) Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of National Sports University. The webinar attracted a record number of about
746 participants.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri P. Gopichand appreciated and thanked Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Shri Kiren Rijiju for their historical and passionate efforts to facilitate diverse needs of Indian Athletes who are going to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He also expressed his hope that this Olympics will be memorable for India, and the athletes will return with a big haul of medals.
He shared the anecdote of his inspiration from Karnam Malleswari's 2000 Sydney Olympics when she won the bronze medal and also shared memories of his own Olympic journey. To become one of the top
medal-winning countries, he emphasised the importance of improving grass-roots coaching and training for aspiring athletes.
Shri R. C. Mishra, LAS (Retd), Vice-Chancellor of National Sports University, while sharing views on India's journey and our expectations from Tokyo, highlighted the efforts of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to make Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modiji's vision of using "Sports as a great means of national integration, reality, and to promote excellence in sports that enhance the sense of achievement, national pride and patriotism".
He also emphasised that India should host Olympics in 2036 or 2040 without waiting any longer. He said that this single decision alone will transform India's sporting landscape and India can take a quantum jump in spreading sporting culture, developing sporting infrastructure and above all in achieving all round excellence in sports performance.
He also expressed hope that Indian athletes will set a new record in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. While stressing the importance of the role played by higher educational institutes in preparing world-class athletes in developed countries, he suggested that National Sports University can lead the joint efforts in developing curriculum for schools or providing high-quality research to our coaches, athletes, sports scientists, and administrators Captain of 1980 Olympics Gold medal winner Indian Hockey team V. Bhaskaran, World Championship medallist and Former Olympian long jumper Anju Bobby George, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardee N. Kunjarani Devi and Deputy Chair of National Coaching Academy, Malaysia Dr. Lim Boon Hooi were also present during the inaugural ceremony as the special guests.
During the technical sessions, President of Hockey India Gyanendro Ningombam, Former Regional Director of SAI Guwahati Dr. Subhash Basumatary, Dronacharya Awardee Coach Nagapuri Ramesh, Former member of Indian Football team Gouramangi Singh, Former Secretary (Sports) AIU Dr. Gurdeep Singh, Former Vice-Chancellor of Swarnim Gujarat Sports University Dr. Jatin Soni, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Manav Rachna Prof. G. L. Khanna, and Sports Psychologist for Olympians Sanjana Kiran shared theirs expert opinions on various sub-themes of the webinar The national webinar was organized with the technical support provided by the
