This tiny Hill Terror torn State has always been on news for the wrong reason, some leader being captured somewhere with drugs, or blockades for months, or underdeveloped highways killing people and so on. But at times, the hard working people of the land shows to the world how talented we are and are not really far behind and with a message that it’s not too late to change.
Recent article at The Hindu titled, From Manipur to Madurai carries some similar news.
Three hard working sisters carry the charm of Manipuri women to Madurai. Bijoi Mala, Chanchal and Mrinalini’s Manipuri sari stole the heart of many at the ongoing North East Trade Fair in Madurai. The article writes that shopper just can't miss their stall, and the compelling creamy drapes of the sari attract the eyeballs and these chirpy women skilled in marketing draw the customer.
Bijoi Mala, recipient of the Manipur State Award for art in 1982 explains, “The pure cotton Manipuri sari which usually comes in white base with brightly colored designs on it. The typical element, the temple border which has not changed over the years is a traditional motif inspired from a historical temple in Imphal called the ‘Moirang' and hence the sari is also termed ‘Moirang fi.”
The article further adds that the sari has an intriguing myth. One of the sister Chanchal says, “It is traditionally believed that our goddess ‘Moirang Thoibi' taught this ancient craft to the Manipuri people and from then on, this became our source of living. Even today people learn to weave the Manipuri sari with piety believing that the goddess herself is imparting the knowledge.”
Shrikumar says, “The Manipuri sari is a versatile piece for any occasion and is a must in your wardrobe”.
And for everyone’s information: The crafts fair is in the MADITSSIA Auditorium, open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. till July 13.
