Visceral larva migrans - Why you should take care of your toddlers around pets
Rajkumari Keibisana *
Visceral Larva Migrans is a condition that affects internal organs caused by parasitic roundworms called Toxocara. Children of 2-5 years old are more susceptible, especially children playing with mud or picking up dirty things from the ground.
MODE OF TRANSMISSION :
These roundworms live in the intestine of infected animals such as dogs or cats and its eggs are passed out in the faeces of the animal. Animal faeces with Toxocara eggs can contaminate the soil it lands for several months.
One can get infected with Toxocara if you ingest soils contaminated with the eggs. This usually happens when kids play in contaminated dirt or if you eat fruits or vegetables grown in contaminated soil.
After the worm eggs are swallowed, they break open in the intestine. The worms travel throughout the body to various organs, such as the lungs, liver, and eyes. They may also travel to the brain and heart.
This can cause fever, anorexia, hepatosplenomegaly (simultaneous en- largement of both the liver and spleen), rash, pneumonitis, asthma, or visual impairment.

Dogs and cats can carry the roundworms in their intestines that cause visceral larva migrans. If you have pets, take extra precautions when cleaning up their poop and take them to the vet regularly.
Washing your hands regularly can also help protect you and your family from visceral larva migrans. Wash all your fruits and veggies before eating them.
