Shining a light on retinoblastoma
- Early detection can save sight and lives -

Each year, the second week of May is observed as World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week, and in 2025, it falls from May 11 to 17.
This global effort aims to raise awareness about retinoblastoma, a rare but potentially life-threatening eye cancer that affects young children — often before the age of five.
As we join the rest of the world in this important week of awareness, it's crucial that we also turn our focus to Manipur, where increased knowledge and timely action can save both vision and lives.
What is Retinoblastoma?
Retinoblastoma is a cancer of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It can affect one or both eyes, and while it may be inherited, most cases occur in children with no family history of the disease. Early detection and treatment offer a survival rate of over 95%, and many children retain functional vision.
Signs and Symptoms
Look out for area white reflection in the pupil known as a cat eye reflex (often seen in flash photos), a squint (crossed or misaligned eyes), redness, swelling, or pain in the eye, an enlarged or cloudy eye, poor vision in one or both eyes.
Parents, teachers, and caregivers play a key role in noticing these signs early. Prompt medical attention can make a crucial difference.
Why Awareness Matters in Manipur
In many parts of North-east India, including Manipur, awareness of retinoblastoma remains low. This often leads to late diagnoses, which can result in more aggressive treatment, including removal of the
eye or, in severe cases, loss of life.
With better awareness, early screening, and swift referral to specialized care centres more children can receive timely and effective treatment.
In Manipur, Shija Eye Care Foundation has taken a leading role in diagnosing and treating retinoblastoma. The center has already successfully treated and operated on multiple cases, offering specialized care to children in need.
With advanced diagnostic tools and a dedicated team, Shija Eye Care Foundation provides both life-saving treatment, cosmetic rehabilitation and vision-preserving options.
What Can We Do as a Community?
o Promote regular eye check-ups for children, especially during immunization visits
o Educate parents and caregivers about early warning signs
o Empower Anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, and schoolteachers with basic training
o Share information widely during World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week and beyond
A Call to Action
This Retinoblastoma Awareness Week, let us come together as a community in Manipur to spread the word. Early detection can save a child's sight—and their life.
If you notice any unusual signs in a child's eyes, don't wait. Consult an eye specialist or visit the nearest health center without delay. By working together, we can ensure that no child in Manipur is left in the dark.
