Manipur Technical University Celebrates World Earth Day with Eco-Friendly Initiatives
Manipur Technical University (MTU) marked World Earth Day 2024 with impactful events, organized by Under Construction Club (Civil Engineering Students Club) and NSS Units I & II. The program, held at the university campus, underscored the institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability and proactive climate action.
The event began with a welcome address by students of Under Construction Club, who highlighted the urgent need for collective efforts to protect the planet. This was followed by an insightful lecture on "Our Power, Our Earth"—this year’s Earth Day theme—delivered by Anand Nongmaithem, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, MTU, emphasizing the importance of the Campus Environmental Management Plan, urging the university community to adopt sustainable practices in daily operations.
In a significant step toward greener governance, Registrar of MTU, Ramananda Nongmeikapam (MCS), inaugurated the university’s Eco-Club and launched the "Zero Single-Use Plastic Campus" initiative. The registrar led a pledge-taking ceremony, where faculty, staff, and students vowed to eliminate single-use plastics from the campus.
The Registrar repeated MTU’s vision to transform into a model environmentally friendly campus, aligning with global sustainability goals. Earlier in the day, over 25 students and faculty members of MTU took part in a 12 km Cyclothon, organized by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur, in collaboration with environmental stakeholders.
The World Earth Day celebrations at MTU reinforced the institution’s dedication to fostering environmental stewardship. Through initiatives like the Eco-Club and plastic-free campus drive, MTU is paving the way for a greener future, inspiring both its community and the state to take bold steps toward sustainability.
