Abstract: In this talk, I will talk about quantum entanglement and its non-equilibrium dynamics. Quantum entanglement is a unique property of quantum mechanics which arises due to the linear nature of Schrodinger equation. This property of quantum mechanics is at the heart of the present quantum revolution. At a fundamental level, quantum entanglement gives rise to the thermal entropy of a sub-system for a given system in a pure state.
Overwhelming evidence also suggests that quantum entanglement explains the enigmatic black hole information paradox. I will talk about the dynamics of entanglement in quantum field theory which undergoes far-from-equilibrium dynamics. Entanglement entropy quantifies the extent of quantum entanglement. In most states which thermalize, the entanglement entropy grows monotonically and saturates at the appropriate thermal values.
This is somewhat similar to what we expect from the second law of thermodynamics. But we found that in certain thermalizing states, the entanglement entropy can have non-monotonic behavior. This is in violation of the well-known paradigm. We explain that the non-monotonic growth of entanglement entropy is a boundary effect which arises due to increase in long range correlation and decrease in short range correlation at early times.
This talk is loosely based on our recent paper Eur. Phys. J. C (2024) 84:1289, open access available at https://doi.org/10.1140/epjc/s10052-024-13678-6
