Birth Anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Poshan Pakhwada
The National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell of Manipur University, Canchipur, organized a special event to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar and observe Poshan Pakhwada, under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. The programme was held under the supervision of Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University.
The observance took place today at 8:00 A.M. in the Centenary Hall of Manipur University. The event was graced by several dignitaries, including: Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh, Dean of Students’ Welfare, Manipur University as a Chief Guest, Dr. Y. Premananda Singh, Head, Department of Law, Manipur University as a Guest of Honour, Prof. S. Opendra Singh, Head, Department of Statistics, Manipur University as a Guest of Honour and Dr. Laishram Santosh Singh, Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell as a President of the event.
The programme commenced with the NSS song, followed by a solemn floral tribute to the portrait of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. In his welcome address, Dr. Dalip, Programme Officer, NSS Unit IV, extended heartfelt greetings to all dignitaries, NSS Programme Officers, and volunteers.
Dr. Y. Premananda Singh, in his address, underscored the enduring relevance of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s vision and the foundational importance of the Indian Constitution. He emphasized that the Constitution is not only the supreme law of the land but also the cornerstone of India’s democratic framework. It defines governance, safeguards citizens' rights, and ensures justice, equality, and liberty for all, while upholding the spirit of democracy and social harmony.

Prof. S. Opendra Singh highlighted the meaningful connection between the observance and the National Service Scheme (NSS). He remarked that NSS is a powerful platform for developing students’ personalities and instilling values of leadership, empathy, and responsibility through dedicated community service.
As Chief Guest, Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh delivered a compelling speech on the historical and social impact of Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions. He emphasized the need to uphold the values enshrined in the Constitution and described the event as a tribute to the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, often revered as the "Father of the Indian Constitution."
In his presidential address, Dr. Laishram Santosh Singh noted that although Dr. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary is traditionally observed on April 14, the university held the event earlier, on April 12, to respect the celebration of Cheiraoba a significant indigenous festival in Manipur. Drawing inspiration from Dr. Ambedkar’s commitment to social reform, he urged NSS volunteers to take an active role in campus beautification and waste management, calling it a “core responsibility and a true expression of dedication to the spirit of NSS.”
The formal function concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Kh. Herachandra Singh, NSS Programme Officer. Following the formal ceremony, the NSS Cell organized a series of impactful activities, including: A poster campaign focusing on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s ideals and Poshan Pakhwada, A cleanliness drive across the university campus and an ex-tempore speech competition by NSS volunteers on the theme “Healthy Lifestyle to Address Obesity in Children”, in connection with the Poshan initiative.
The event concluded with closing remarks by Dr. H. Suraj Singh, Programme Officer, NSS Unit III, Manipur University.
