NEFIS SUBMITS MEMORANDUM TO MANIPUR CHIEF MINISTER TO LOOK INTO POIROUKHONGJIN HIGH SCHOOL ISSUE!
DEMANDS ENLARGING OF THE EDUCATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE STATE TO ENSURE QUALITY EDUCATION FOR ALL STUDENTS!
DEMANDS STRINGENT ACTIONS AGAINST THOSE INVOLVED IN THE MISAPPROPRIATION OF SCHOOL FUNDS!
North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) today wrote to the Chief Minister of Manipur, Shri N. Biren Singh regarding the issue of acute shortage of teachers and educational infrastructure in Poiroukhongjin High School. The crisis in the school came to light when a video of students throwing books outside the headmaster's office in protest against their grievances surfaced on social media. It should be noted that this matter has been brewing for quite some time now. Earlier also there had been a protest staged by the students and parents regarding the same issue.
It has been reported that the school currently has only 12 teachers on the teaching staff managing the classes from 1 to 10. The students and teachers are thereby facing acute difficulty with regard to the conduction of regular classes. Since there are no teachers for the subjects like Hindi and Home Science, classes for these subjects are not at all conducted.
Furthermore, there is only one teacher for the subjects Science, Social Science, English, Mathematics, and Manipuri. This grave issue jeopardizes students' academic careers as well as their futures. We would also like to apprise you about the issue of the misappropriation of school funds by the headmaster of the school.
Regarding education as a crucial element to attain progress and development of the students, the government should ensure that each and every student gets a quality education. Such issues i.e. shortage of teaching staff and inadequate educational infrastructure is plaguing all government schools in the state. It is unfortunate that continued negligence on the part of successive governments has caused these issues to fester.
It is high time for the government to take up the responsibility and seriously look into the issue of crumbling government-run educational institutions. Such issues can be tackled by establishing more quality schools that are adequately funded with proper infrastructures and teaching staff.
In a memorandum sent to the Chief Minister, it has been demanded that the government should immediately look into the matter and resolve the issue at the earliest by recruiting more teachers. Proper educational infrastructure should be established and the existing infrastructure should be enlarged to ensure quality education for students of the state.
Moreover, it also demanded stringent action against those involved in the misappropriation of school funds. NEFIS would intensify its struggle for equal and quality education for all in the coming days.
