Many hurt in poll-clash at Andro

Imphal, February 03: Atleast five persons reportedly sustained injuries and valuable properties damaged in clashes between political workers of two candidates at Andro AC last night.

Police have registered a case in this connection and the injured who have been hospitalised identified as Yumkhaibam Dharma (65) s/o late Achou, Yumkhaibam Chandramukta (50) s/o Tulo, his son Surchandra (28), Phanjoubam Tonja (35) s/o Indra, all residents of Andro Awang Leikai, and Ningthoujam Pabitra (60) s/o (L) N Dharma of Andro Awang Champra Leikai.

Dharma reportedly sustained injuries on his head and thigh, Chandramukta on his thigh, Suresh has his right leg broken, Tonja sustained injuries on face and hand and Pabitra on his head and chest.

Police picked them up from their respective houses this morning and later admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Talking to reporters in connection with last night�s incident, Surchandra said at around 6 pm workers of Congress candidate from Andro AC S Chandro not only pelted stones but also ransacked all the properties like water tanks, carrom boards, etc kept inside the polling camp of an MPP candidate of the same Constituency.

After half an hour, the attackers came with sticks and other arms and smached doors and windows of the six persons before taking them to a club at Andro Machengpat where they were subjected to severe thrashing.

They were finally released at around 2.30 am, Surchandra said.

Yumkhaibam Dharma and Ningthoujam Pabitra, who also suffered injuries in the incident, informed that unidentified persons who came to attack their houses charged them with campaigning for MPP candidate Thounaojam Shyamkumar and threatened with dire consequences if they continue to do so.

Meanwhile, expressing strong condemnation over the incident, Babita, wife of MPP candidate Thounaojam Shyamkumar has appealed to all concerned to ensure such unfortunate incident do not recur.

In another poll related violence, a 35-year old woman identified as Athui Gangmei of Luwangshangbam Matai Ching has been reportedly admitted to RIMS after he was beaten up by some persons on alleged charge of campaigning for the Heingang AC candidate Babita Devi when she had gone to ask for returning the money borrowed from her by Mani Gangmei of the same village who is said to a worker of the Congress party.
