Imphal, January 14:
The Kuki Mothers' Association has appealed for support to women candidates contesting Assembly elections in both the hills and valley so that women legislators can participate in decision making for the State.
KMA president Rose Mangshi Haokip observed that even as there women candidates in the past, no women politician was able to contest the Assembly successfully.
Noting that the women of the State are unable to participate in the decision making process of the State because of the inability of women candidates in Assembly election, she observed that people need to repose faith in women candidates and it's time to elect some women candidates in the 9th Assembly elections.
Rose Mangshi was speaking as guest of honour at the 7th anniversary observation of Women NGO Forum at Manipur Hindi Parishad.
Notwithstanding the better economic and social status attained by women in the valley area, their involvement in electoral politics is almost negligible, she said.
In her presidential address, chief patron of the Forum W Joymati said that there has been a remarkable change in the position of Manipuri women in the recent years in terms of their financial condition and education.
Despite the change, women are not completely free from discrimination at their work places and at other times and they are still unable to live without fear or apprehension.
What is more disturbing is the case of raising cases of violence against women, Joymati observed.
Speaking on the occasion, ex-councillor of Imphal Municipal Council Kh Bidyapati and Amusana Paite spoke on the present status of Manipuri women, their responsibilities at present and duties for future.
