For the first time, MA (Manipuri) course would be taught and studied in Meetei Mayek starting from the current academic session.
A transliteration / publication committee has been already constituted to transliterate in Meetei Mayek all books written in Bengali script.
Speaking to media persons at MUSU office today, transliteration / publication committee convenor Dr N Sanatomba said that MA (Manipuri) would be taught and studied in Meetei Mayek as soon as the university can be opened.
The committee has already initiated due process to make 101 text books written in Meetei Mayek available to students of MA (Manipuri).
All the reference books of MA (Manipuri) prescribed or recommended by MU would be transliterated into Meetei Mayek.
Moreover, other books available in MU library which have been recommended as beneficial to MA (Manipuri) students, PhD theses, dissertations and selected souvenirs would be transliterated in phased manner, Dr Sanatomba said.
Publishers would be allowed to print text books and reference books in Meetei Mayek if they complete the same work by July 31, he said.
He then appealed to the MU authority to allow students of MA (Manipuri) who come from Tripura and Assam study MA (Manipuri) in Bengali script for some years.
He also appealed to the State Government to take up the issue of Meetei Mayek with the Governments of Assam and Tripura to the effect that Meetei Mayek is adopted in place of Bengali script for Manipuri subject starting from lower classes in the two States.
He further urged the Government to amend the Manipur State Official Language Act so that candidates can give civil services exam in Meetei Mayek.
