Vancouver, Canada :: 2011

Vancouver, Canada: Elek Imredy's Girl in Wet Suit sculpture was unveiled on a rock off Stanley Park. Unable to obtain a licence to replicate Copenhagen's Little Mermaid statue, the city commissioned a modern version with diving mask, wetsuit, and swimfins. It was created by Elek Imredy and placed on 9 June 1972. (She's often misidentified as a mermaid. Check her feet. She's got a couple.) Theres an interesting article on the sculpture, and its Hungarian-born creator, According to Peggy Imredy, the artist's widow, the Girl "represents Vancouver's dependence on the sea and the necessity to use the sea for the benefit of all."
