CWG 2022: Mirabai shines yet again, opens gold medal account for India

Tokyo Games silver medallist, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has won India's first gold medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games with a total lift of record 201 kg in the women's 49 kg category.
In the snatch, Mirabai started at 84 kg in her first attempt and secured the best lift of 88 kg (second attempt) after she failed her third attempt to lift 90 kg.
In clean and jerk, Mirabai easily lifted 109 kg in her first attempt and 113 kg in her second attempt.
She faltered yet again in her third attempt to lift 115 kg and eventually finished with 201 kg, one kg less than her Tokyo Games performance last year (87 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk) .
Earlier in the day, Sanket Sagar won a silver in the men's 55kg category to open India's account at the games with his best lift of 248kg before Gururaja Poojary clinched a bronze medal in the men's 61kg category.
Gururaja, a silver medallist at the 2018 CWG at Gold Coast, lifted a total of 269kg (118kg+151kg) to finish in third place.
Malaysia's Aznil Bin Bidin Muhamad grabbed the gold medal with a Games record lift of 285 kg (127+158) .
Morea Baru of Papua New Guinea bagged the silver with a total lift of 273kg (121+152) .
