Thangjalet Memorial Football Tourney kicks off

The much awaited Late Thangjalet Memorial Football Tournament was inaugurated at Public Ground, Churachandpur today.
The Tournament is being organised by 27 Sector under the aegis of IGAR (S) in commemoration of Late Hav Thangjalet Haokip, Shaurya Chakra of Churachandpur.
Havaldar Thangjalet belonged to 11 Assam Rifles and while deployed in Tamenglong District made the supreme sacrifice after eliminating four UG cadres in a fierce operation on the night of May 13, 2009.The gallant soldier was awarded Shaurya Chakra (Posthumously) in the highest traditions of the Indian Security Forces.
The tournament since its inception has received an overwhelming response from all quarter with 23 teams participating from Churachandpur and neighboring district.
To mark the inauguration of the tournament, Master T William Lalgunlen Haokip, Son of Late Havaldar Thangjalet Haokip, SC, made a ceremonial kick off which was followed by an exhibition match between Lamka Sporting Club and team of 11 Assam Rifles, the parent unit of Late Havaldar Thangjalet, SC.
Cultural events and the spectacular pipe band displayed by the Assam Rifles added more excitement to the grand opening ceremony.
Commander 27 Sector Assam Rifles who graced the occasion as chief guest in his address mention about the supreme sacrifice made by the gallant soldier and urged the gathering to draw examples from th e brave soldiers of the soil.
He also mentioned that the Sector has been implementing various projects including Peace Seminar and other developmental projects to bring a lasting peace in the region.
Thangjalet Football Tournament is one such platform which offers an opportunity for different tribes and Community to unite and say no to violence and inter tribal rivalry, he added.
The huge turnout of crowds for the event is a testimony to the popularity of the tournament.
