The second edition of the Indigenous Naga Wrestling Championship 2024, organised by the Indian Army under the auspices of the Spear Corps, concluded successfully on Friday in Senapati district.
The event drew enthusiastic participation from 70 wrestlers, aged 10 to 20, competing across three weight categories - under 55kg, 55kg-65kg, and 65kg and above.
The championship celebrated Naga cultural heritage, promoting unity and sportsmanship among the region's youth through three days of intense competition.
Spectators, including dignitaries and locals, were captivated by the wrestlers' impressive skill, camaraderie, and mutual respect.
This event provided a platform to nurture indigenous wrestling talent and emphasised preserving traditional sports, said a press release from the PRO & spokesperson, Ministry of Defence, Manipur, Nagaland & Southern Arunachal Pradesh.
In the under 55kg weight category, Master Adavio clinched the gold medal, with Master Avahrai securing silver.
The 55kg-65kg category saw Master PJ Pavei take gold, while Master Veikho earned silver.
In the 65kg and above category, Master Hrikhelou emerged victorious with gold, and Master S Vilah won silver.
Winners in all categories were honoured at a grand closing ceremony with cash prizes, medals, and certificates.
The Indian Army's initiative to host this championship received widespread appreciation from the local community, reinforcing the Army's commitment to promoting cultural and sporting traditions while strengthening its bond with the people of Manipur, the release continued.
The Spear Corps thanked all participants, organisers and supporters who contributed to the event's success.
