Imphal, August 20 2018:
Manipur Olympic Association (MOA) today clarified that there is no misappropriation of funds sanctioned to the association by the North Eastern Council (NEC) in connection with the North East Olympic Games and there is no reason to be blacklisted by NEC.
This was stated by MOA senior vice-president GA Ibopishak at a press meet held today at the conference hall of the association in response to a news item published in a local daily that MOA is going to be blacklisted in connection with misappropriation of Rs 15 lakh allotted for organising NE games and sports.
The meet was also attended by many members of the management committee of the association.
GA Ibopishak stated that NEC sanctioned Rs 20 lakh on May 24 last as first instalment against Rs 81 lakh proposed by the Manipur Olympic Association for organisation of the North East Olympic Games for few disciplines and Rs 15 lakh was withdrawn accordingly.
The games were supposed to be organised from July 22 to 25 .
However the games could not be organised as scheduled due to lack of fund and the State's restive situation and MOA was considering to prepare a new schedule, the senior vice president continued.
The association has sought financial assistance from the State Government on many occasions, he said.
General secretary of the association, Sunil Elangbam asserted that the North East Olympic which will be organised by MOA under the aegis of Indian Olympic Association will be the first of its kind.
The games are aimed at uniting and developing a common platform for all Olympic associations of the North East and further strengthen North East Olympic Association, he added.
The general secretary went on to say that the games will see around 1900 players from across 8 North East States who will compete in 10 disciplines.
The estimated expenditure for organising such mega event is around Rs 1 crore and 6 lakh and the association has been asking the State Government to provide Rs 30 lakh to make up the costs, he stated.
