MU fencing team bag 2 medals at AIIU Fencing tourney

Imphal, January 08 2019: Manipur University fencing team has so far collected two medals including a silver and a bronze ending two years of medal drought, on the opening day of the All India Inter University (AIIU) Fencing (M&W) Tournament, 2018-19 which will be held at Guru Nank Dev University, Amritsar, Punjab till January 11, 2019.The men's team consisting of Chinglemba Seram (Standard College), Th Bommai (BM College), K Nepolian Singh (Standard College) and A Lenin Meetei (KP College) bagged the silver medal in the epee event staged today after going down 11-15 to hosts GNDU in the final.

The MU team defeated CRS University, Jind, Haryana 15-10 in the first round, University of Mumbai 15-8 in the pre-quarter finals, University of Kerala 15-12 in the quarter finals and Kurukshetra University 15-7 in the semi-finals to book the final berth.

Meanwhile the women's sabre team comprising of S.Hiron (Ideal Girls' College), Jemmy Shandham (SSG Girls' College) and S Sophia Devi (GP Women's College) settled for the bronze medal after losing 7-15 at the hands of Panjab University, Chandigarh in the semi-finals.

MU team defeated Adikavi Nannaya University, Aadhra Pradesh 15-4, Dr.Bhim Rao Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad, MS 15-2 in the pre-quarter finals and Punjabi University, Patiala 15-7 in the quarter finals.
